According to Larry Brooks of the New York Post, league sources have indicated that impending free agent Ryan Smyth had let it be known that he "would not consider re-signing with the Islanders if [Alexei] Yashin remained with the team for even a portion of the remaining four years of his contract." So much for the theory that the buy-out was engineered to appease the fans. Brooks also reports that former Islanders captain Michael Peca could look to return to the Island and reunite with head coach Ted Nolan, for whom he played in Buffalo. Peca played last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and like Smyth, is an impending free agent this offseason. Peca, too, could be swayed by the buy-out of Yashin. The pair did not mesh well during their tenure together.

  • Yashin scores more goals in an off year than Peca does in a good season. You want to pay Yashin $4million not to play and then give Peca a couple of million to ice the puck for you all season long?
  • I would rather see Smyth return to Edmonton. No offense to Islanders fans, but it's where he belongs.
  • I want Smyth back on the Island, along with Jason Blake. Peca is not worth the money he is asking, granted the Islanders now have some more cap room.

Islanders buy out Yashin's contract for $17.63M

Finally! The Isles can start moving forward, away from the Mad Mike days (whom the Isles also recently cut ties with). This is a signal to the fans that Wang & Snow are serious about making this team a contender and perhaps making a run at resigning Ryan Smyth...

Buying Yashin Out Is Stupider Than Signing Him In The First Place

I'll tell ya fucking something. One of the stupidest moves ever in NHL history was signing this prat to a contract for 10 years, It's a suicidal move and you must be a complete moron to offer the deal in the first place. You're stuck with Yashin as you can't ever trade him for the money he's making. But it's even stupider buying him out at this point. It&...
