Yesterday, speculations were surfacing that the New Jersey Devils were planning on retiring former defenseman Scott Niedermayer’s No. 27. Today, I woke up to find out these speculations have materialized into fact. Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record, confirmed on his notarized Fire & Ice Blog that the organization intends on retiring No. 27 some time this coming season. Ever since Scott Niedermayer retired in 2010, the topic of his number retirement has been a very touchy and controversial subject amongst the Devil’s faithful. Just as many are in favor of seeing No. 27 ascend to the rafters of the Prudential Center as there are against it.
Analyzing the arguments both sides are making means reflecting on the duration of Niedermayer’s career and the outcomes of his decisions during it.
