As the Washington Capitals persevered through an up-and-down 2010-11 season, they did so on the shoulders of three different goaltenders. Michal Neuvirth, Semyon Varlamov and Braden Holtby each played well for short periods of time, but none of the three were able to separate themselves from the pack. With Holtby’s recent demotion to Hershey, coach Bruce Boudreau is left with a critical decision: which goalie to start for game one on Wednesday night? Until this season, Varlamov has been considered the Capitals’ goalie of the future. He lead Washington to the second round of the 2009 playoffs, after outplaying Henrik Lundvquist in the Caps’ seven-game series win against the Rangers in the opening round. However, he stumbled late in the series against Montreal last year, and has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency for much of this season.
