While the Colorado Avalanche are off to their best start since relocating from Quebec, the Washington Capitals have been incapable of holding a lead. The Avalanche look to remain undefeated when they conclude a three-game trip against the Capitals on Saturday night. Under first-year coach and former star goaltender Patrick Roy, Colorado is 4-0-0 for the first time since the club moved to Denver prior to the 1995-96 season. The Nordiques opened 5-0-0 the previous season, the franchise's last in Quebec. "We are trying to make the playoffs and go as far as we can," said forward Ryan O'Reilly, who has two goals with an assist this season. "We are approaching every game to learn and get better, and right now we are having success and doing it." The Avs missed the playoffs in their last three seasons under coach Joe Sacco, but seem to have a renewed purpose with Roy, who anchored Colorado's Stanley Cup title runs in 1996 and 2001. "The whole menta...

Patrick Roy Bringing Intensity and Structure to the Avalanche

Patrick Roy has brought intensity and structure with him behind the bench. Getty Images When Patrick Roy was named coach of the Avalanche, how he would do was uncertain. Would the greatest goaltender of all time (sorry Marty) be a good coach? Shouldn’t the Avs look for someone more seasoned after the fiasco with Joe Sacco? The more Roy spoke, the more convincing he became. At his...

Cory Sarich enjoying rebirth of NHL career with Avalanche

Too old. Too slow. The game passed him by. Throw-in. Had to take him. Those were some of the unflattering things said about Cory Sarich when a trade sending him from the Calgary Flames to the Avalanche was announced this summer right before the NHL draft. He was a 35-year-old defenseman who often was a healthy scratch with one of the worst teams in the league last season. Expectations...

Colorado’s Win Over Bruins Latest Sign Patrick Roy’s Turnaround of Avalanche in Full Effect

BOSTON — The Colorado Avalanche almost certainly won’t win the Stanley Cup. There’s a good chance they won’t even make the playoffs. But it’s almost impossible to deny, even just four games into the season, that they won’t be a much better team than they were last year. That, of course, is not saying much. Colorado won just 16 games last season in the lockout-shortened...

Latta, Carrick Assigned, Schmidt Recalled

The Washington Capitals have announced that they have assigned defenseman Connor Carrick and center Michael Latta to AHL Hershey.  Carrick started the first three games for Washington before being scratched last night in favor of Alexander Urbom.  Latta started the season with the Caps, but was sent down to Hershey after one game only to be recalled earlier this week.  They have...

Capitals call up defenseman Schmidt

The Washington Capitals on Friday recalled defenseman Nate Schmidt from the team's American Hockey League affiliate the Hershey Bears. The move was necessary after defenseman John Erskine sustained an upper-body injury on Thursday in a 3-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. Additionally the Capitals assigned defenseman Connor Carrick and center Michael Latta to Hershey. Schmidt...

Avs shut out Bruins to stay perfect

Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 39 saves in his 37th NHL shutout, and the Colorado Avalanche stayed perfect with a 2-0 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. The Avalanche are 4-0 under new coach Patrick Roy, their best mark since the franchise relocated from Quebec to Colorado for the 1995-96 season. Giguere, making his first start of the season, made several sparkling...

Sergei Fedorov officially signs with CSKA Moscow

Former Red Wing Sergei Fedorov has signed a remainder-of-the-year contract with CSKA Moscow, playing for what Sovetsky Sport reports is a league-minimum 3 million rubles ($92,650), and the 43-year-old center will begin his comeback soon. He told Championat's Maria Rogovskaya that he's feeling healthy and hale despite having battled back issues in the past, but he does not...

Capitals trying to stay patient despite early offensive struggles

Adam Oates is preaching patience. Sure he’s not happy that the Washington Capitals have only one win in their first four games. It’s not ideal the second line has yet to record a single point as a unit at even strength. And the lack of NHL experience in the bottom half of the defensive lineup has made for some growing pains. But it’s not yet time to push the panic button the...

Colorado Avalanche hand Boston Bruins first loss of the season

The Colorado Avalanche handed the Boston Bruins their first loss of the season, beating the hometown team 2-0 Thursday night in front of a sellout crowd at TD Garden. The Avs are now a surprising 4-0 to begin the season while the Bruins fall to 2-1. But while the Avs were a perfect three-for-three on the penalty kill, the B’s gave up their first power play goal this season. And...

They have added young star talent in Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog...

Sergei Fedorov’s unretirement story

The story goes something like this, and this is "how I know it" to go: a year-and-a-half ago, Vladimir Putin, who proudly claims the KHL as his creation, duly noted that the KHL's marquee teams, like SKA St. Petersburg, the Ak Bars Kazan, Avangard Omsk, Metallurg Magnitogorsk and (at the time) Salavat Yulaev Ufa are almost completely located outside of Moscow, with...

Boston Bruins Projected Lineup vs Colorado Avalanche

The Boston Bruins take on the Colorado Avalanche at the TD Garden Thursday night in the first of two games this season. It’s been exactly two years to the day since the Avalanche handed the Bruins a 1-0 loss in Boston and the B’s are winless in their last seven meetings vs. Colorado on home ice, at 0-5-1-1. It’s Boston’s longest such streak vs. any NHL opponent. But like...

Six months later: Preds look like big winners in Forsberg, Erat trade

On trade deadline day last season (April 3), general manager David Poile was able to make a trade that would help the future of the club. Poile traded veteran winger Martin Erat and prospect Michael Latta to the Washington Capitals for a top Swedish prospect named Filip Forsberg. “It felt good today," said Poile after the trade, "and I know it will feel good in the future...

Hurricanes 3 Capitals 2 ReCap

The Washington Capitals fell to 1-3-0 to start that season after a 3-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.  It was the Capitals first loss at home this season and first loss in the new Metropolitan Division.  The Capitals got out to an early lead behind a Jason Chimera goal, but were unable to keep the Hurricanes from tying it up and taking the lead in the third period.  On to the...
