Jean-Sebastien Giguere was brilliant in goal for the Avalanche on Thursday night keeping Colorado unbeaten on the young NHL season with a 2-0 shutout of the Boston Bruins at TD Garden. Making his first start of the season Giguere was a commanding presence in upping the Avs' record to 4-0 stopping all 39 Boston shots. Yet — and this speaks perhaps to a new mind-set set forth by new Avs coach Patrick Roy — Giguere was not totally satisfied with his performance. "I wasn't perfect in any way" said Giguere whose win was the 252nd of his career and 37th shutout. "There's things that I would like to improve. But overall this is a pretty tough building to come in and win so I'm pretty happy with the result." Ryan O'Reilly's late first-period goal stood up for Giguere who faced 29 Bruins shots in the final two periods while the Avs put 16 on Boston in that span. O'Reilly's redirect of Andre Benoit's shot from the point on the power ...

Avs shut out Bruins to stay perfect

Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 39 saves in his 37th NHL shutout, and the Colorado Avalanche stayed perfect with a 2-0 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. The Avalanche are 4-0 under new coach Patrick Roy, their best mark since the franchise relocated from Quebec to Colorado for the 1995-96 season. Giguere, making his first start of the season, made several sparkling...

Stay away from Simeon Varlamov tonight despite hot start - NHL Daily Game Picks

Busts G Semyon Varlamov, Colorado Avalanche – $21,385: I’m going against a hot goalie in Varlamov tonight even though he has a 1.00 GAA and .967 save percentage in three games this season. He is facing a high powered offense led by Alex Ovechkin and company. This will be the first time Varlamov faces his former Capitals mates since being trade and I have a feeling he gets lit...

Avs place Hunwick on waivers

The Colorado Avalanche placed defenseman Matt Hunwick on waivers to make room for fellow blueliner Ryan Wilson the Denver Post reports. The 28-year-old hasn’t appeared in a regular season game for the Avs so it probably shouldn’t be too shocking that he was the odd man out. He collected six assists in 43 games last season for Colorado and began his time with the organization...

Which Player Was Traded to Colorado Along With Ray Bourque in 2000?

March 6, 2000 was a sad day in Bruins history, although it led to an amazing accomplishment for one of the game’s all-time greats. That was the day Ray Bourque was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, a move that eventually led him to finally win the Stanley Cup, the final accomplishment of a Hall of Fame career. However, he wasn’t the only one who went to Denver, though. Which...

Patrick Roy Bringing Intensity and Structure to the Avalanche

Patrick Roy has brought intensity and structure with him behind the bench. Getty Images When Patrick Roy was named coach of the Avalanche, how he would do was uncertain. Would the greatest goaltender of all time (sorry Marty) be a good coach? Shouldn’t the Avs look for someone more seasoned after the fiasco with Joe Sacco? The more Roy spoke, the more convincing he became. At his...

Cory Sarich enjoying rebirth of NHL career with Avalanche

Too old. Too slow. The game passed him by. Throw-in. Had to take him. Those were some of the unflattering things said about Cory Sarich when a trade sending him from the Calgary Flames to the Avalanche was announced this summer right before the NHL draft. He was a 35-year-old defenseman who often was a healthy scratch with one of the worst teams in the league last season. Expectations...

Colorado’s Win Over Bruins Latest Sign Patrick Roy’s Turnaround of Avalanche in Full Effect

BOSTON — The Colorado Avalanche almost certainly won’t win the Stanley Cup. There’s a good chance they won’t even make the playoffs. But it’s almost impossible to deny, even just four games into the season, that they won’t be a much better team than they were last year. That, of course, is not saying much. Colorado won just 16 games last season in the lockout-shortened...

Berkshire Bank Faceoff: Jean-Sebastien Giguere Expected to Start for Avalanche Against Bruins

BOSTON — The Bruins have started the season as well as you could hope for at least through two games, and they’ll get something of a break as they look to make it three in a row to open the year. While Semyon Varlamov has been one of the best goalies in the league so far — boasting a 3-0-0 record with a 1.00 goals against average — it’s expected that Jean-Sebastien Giguere...

Why no meeting or suspension for Steve Downie was the wrong decision by the NHL

As Roman Josi remains out indefinitely with a concussion, did the NHL get the call right by deciding not to have a hearing or to suspend Avalanche forward Steve Downie? Based on a frame-by-frame breakdown of video evidence, one would be inclined to believe otherwise. This evening, Brendan Shanahan of the NHL’s Department of Player Safety handed down a three-game suspension to...

Avalanche-Capitals Preview

While the Colorado Avalanche are off to their best start since relocating from Quebec, the Washington Capitals have been incapable of holding a lead. The Avalanche look to remain undefeated when they conclude a three-game trip against the Capitals on Saturday night. Under first-year coach and former star goaltender Patrick Roy, Colorado is 4-0-0 for the first time since the club...

Avalanche-Bruins Preview

Under Patrick Roy, the Colorado Avalanche are off to their best start since moving to Denver. Whether they can keep it going despite their top goaltender getting a night of rest remains to be seen. Colorado visits the Boston Bruins on Thursday night seeking its sixth consecutive road win in the series. The Avalanche are 3-0-0 for the first time in their 18-year history since moving...

Bruins vs Avalanche: Keys To the Game

The Bruins have played excellent in the past two games and now they look to the third game of the season. The team they're going up against? The Colorado Avalanche. The team Ray Bourque won a cup with because we couldn't get him one.The Avalanche have been in the rebuilding process for a few years now. They have added young star talent in Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog...

Colorado Avalanche hand Boston Bruins first loss of the season

The Colorado Avalanche handed the Boston Bruins their first loss of the season, beating the hometown team 2-0 Thursday night in front of a sellout crowd at TD Garden. The Avs are now a surprising 4-0 to begin the season while the Bruins fall to 2-1. But while the Avs were a perfect three-for-three on the penalty kill, the B’s gave up their first power play goal this season. And...

Boston Bruins Projected Lineup vs Colorado Avalanche

The Boston Bruins take on the Colorado Avalanche at the TD Garden Thursday night in the first of two games this season. It’s been exactly two years to the day since the Avalanche handed the Bruins a 1-0 loss in Boston and the B’s are winless in their last seven meetings vs. Colorado on home ice, at 0-5-1-1. It’s Boston’s longest such streak vs. any NHL opponent. But like...
