“Look away, I’m hideous.” The Colorado Avalanche signed center John Mitchell this offseason for his grit and toughness, and after looking at that picture of Mitchell there, he must have those two qualities in spades. On Thursday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets, and on only his second shift of the game, Mitchell took a shot to the forehead off the stick of Adrian Aucoin, causing a nasty gash that took 10 stitches to close. But there was the Avs center back out there for the second period, scoring a crucial goal in the third to put Colorado up by three en route to their 4-0 victory. Considering the beating that Mitchell’s face has taken in only three games this season, expect the 28-year-old’s mug to look like a cross between Frankenstein’s monster and the loser in an acid fight by the time the playoffs roll around.
