Mark Arcobello worked hard to become a regular in the Edmonton Oilers lineup, but was temporarily derailed by a freight train named Drew Doughty. The Los Angeles Kings defenceman knocked Arcobello out of the game back on Dec. 17 and put him on the shelf with a rib injury. “It was a really sensitive area, I got hit really hard there by Doughty in L.A.,” Arcobello said. “It was one of those things where I really couldn’t do anything for a few days, just rolling over and taking deep breaths was hurting me. But the trainers here did a great job helping me recover pretty quickly.” The Oilers centre recently returned to the lineup, scoring a goal Tuesday in a 5-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues. It was his third game since being activated off injury reserve. “It was nice score to tie it up at that point, but then I was on for the next two goals against, which was tough. We weren’t able to climb back into it after that,” Arcobello said. “It was good to get the goal, but a win is more important and if I could have prevented a couple more of those goals, it would have been a different story.” Arcobello, 25, missed seven games recovering from his injury. Anyone who has ever had the misfortune of suffering a bruised rib can attest how debilitating it can be. Anything involving movement hurts. “I’ve had a few injuries in that area, it’s always touch and go,” Arcobello said. “The first couple of days I couldn’t even breathe, it was just painful.” Even after he recovered from the injury, Arcobello still needed time to get back in game shape. Having trouble breathing makes it difficult to maintain a high level of fitness.
