The Chicago Blackhawks acquired the rights to defenseman Steve Montador from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a seventh round pick in 2012 or 2013.
Montador, 31, had a career-best 21 goals with five goals last season while leading the Sabres with a plus-16 rating. He will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
Montador has played nine seasons with five different teams. He has 28 goals and 89 assists for his career.
Chicago is looking to bolster its backline after trading Brian Campbell to Carolina last week.
