Phoenix won the opener 3-2 in overtime after giving up a goal to Brent Seabrook with 14 seconds left in regulation. The Blackhawks pulled it out this time, with Bickell beating Mike Smith from between the circles after Viktor Stalberg kept a pass by Rostislav Klesla in Phoenix's zone. Never-say-die Blackhawks steal 'huge' Game 2

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Just as they had been 48 hours earlier, the Blackhawks on Saturday were mere seconds from defeat Saturday night in Game 2 against the Coyotes. The clocked ticked toward zero and a two-game first-round deficit. But in a surreal episode of dj vu, a Chicago goal in the final moments of regulation forced overtime for a second straight game, and this time the Blackhawks...

Coyotes rely on pack mentality without Vrbata

GLENDALE, Ariz. Coyotes captain Shane Doan understands the difficulty of competing without a top player in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. He was there in 1997 when Jeremy Roenick blew out his knee in a knee-on-knee collision with Anaheim center Ted Drury in Game 6 of a seven-game series loss that Phoenix had led three games to two. He was there in 1998 when the...

Shaw ejected for leveling Smith; faces hearing

Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw was ejected for leveling Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith last night. Smith came out to play the puck behind the net, and Shaw collided with the Coyotes netminder. It's hard to say whether or not Shaw did it on purpose. Either way he was given a game misconduct and a major penalty for charging. He will be facing a hearing today. Chicago...

Blackhawks RW Shaw to have hearing with NHL

Chicago Blackhawks rookie right wing Andrew Shaw will have a hearing with NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan on Monday for his hit to the head of Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith. Shaw's shoulder connected with Smith's head after the two met behind the net during Saturday's 4-3 overtime win by Chicago. The victory leveled the Western Conference quarterfinal series...

Andrew Shaw ejected for decleating Coyotes goalie Mike Smith

The Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw was ejected from last night's game for hitting Coyotes goalie Mike Smith. Depending on what angle you watch this collision from, it does appear that Shaw caught Smith with an elbow in the head. I think that Shaw could have avoided this collision and this was an unnecessary hit on the goalie who was playing the puck. There are other hockey...

Video: Shaw knocks over Smith

In the second period of Saturday's game in Phoenix, Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw ran into Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith behind the net. As Smith was playing the puck, Shaw skated behind the net, attempted to cause a turnover and barreled over Smith. The Coyotes goaltender was down on the ice for a few minutes before he stayed in the game. Meanwhile, Shaw was given a five-minute...

Coyotes notebook: OEL making himself known

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Lost in the hysteria of the Game 1 WhiteOut, a blown late lead and Martin Hanzals overtime dramatics was that fact that 20-year-old defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson logged a game-high 31 minutes, 14 seconds of ice time. For those doing the math, yes, thats darn near half of Thursdays 69-plus-minute game. I felt pretty good, Ekman-Larsson said. I played with a lot...

Late-scoring Blackhawks head home with series tied

For two straight games, the Chicago Blackhawks trailed the Phoenix Coyotes in the final stages of regulation and pulled goalie Corey Crawford for a late desperation surge with six attackers. Both times it worked in the opening-round playoff series that is now tied at 1-1. Chicago's Brent Seabrook scored with 14.2 seconds to go in Game 1 to even it up before Phoenix pulled out...

Andrew Shaw Ejected After Taking Out Mike Smith

In Game 2 of the Phoenix Coyotes and Chicago Blackhawks playoff series, Andrew Shaw received a game misconduct after colliding with Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith. Smith stayed down on the ice for a while, seemingly in pain, but eventually decided to stay in the game, despite his concussion history. I’m having trouble deciding whether or not Smith deserves an Academy Award for this...

Phoenix Coyotes Ice Girls photos: Blackhawks know thy enemy

The Chicago Blackhawks are set to take on the Phoenix Coyotes in (wait, what? Phoenix has a hockey team?? Yes, they do. Does anyone go? No, no they don’t.) in the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs opening round. The #4 vs. #5 seed series begins at 9 pm ct Thursday April 12th in Phoenix as they have the home-ice advantage.
