Talk about your open-mindedness–responding to an invitation from the Chicago Gay Hockey Association, Brent Sopel, defenseman for the Chicago Blackhawks, and his family, are planning to participate in the Chicago Gay Pride Parade…and they’re bringing Lord Stanley’s mug along for the ride.
Sopel said that he is honored to attend the parade, and states that part of his participation is to honor the memory of Brendan Burke, the openly gay son of Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke, who was killed in an automobile accident earlier this year.
Not to get political or anything, but this is definitely a cool thing that Sopel and the Hawks are doing, especially when you consider how much machismo is ingrained into the hockey culture. This gesture, along with Burke’s acceptance of his son’s lifestyle, will definitely help to break down the barriers that members of the homosexual community continue to face in the secon...
