Columbus Blue Jackets
Detroit Red Wings
Lets just say the Columbus Blue Jackets were given that most-elusive second chance to make a first impression, and they made the most of it.
Thursday nights game in Detroit was the first the Blue Jackets would play in front of new general manager Jarmo Kekalainen, who joined the team in the Motor City from his native Finland. It took a few days for the NHLs first-ever European GM to get all of his papers in order after being named to his position last week. But he had finally arrived in North America, and you can imagine the excitement level was high for him and the team when he addressed the players Monday at Joe Louis Arena and then settled in to see his guys take on the Red Wings.
A funny thing happened, though, on the way to impressing the new boss. On the first shift of the game, Columbus coughed up the puck in its own zone, and talented Red Wings rookie Damien Brunner swept it from the left doorstep through the five-hole of Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. Eighteen se...

This was just a horrifying moment in Detroit. Artem Anisimov suffered what appeared to be a very serious head injury during the Columbus Blue Jackets meeting with the Red Wings on Thursday night. Columbus Blue Jackets forward Derek Dorsett was pretty intent on fighting Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson. He knew Ericsson doesn’t fight often and would be an easy target for him. Red Wings enforcer Jordin Tootoo was there, and stepped in before Ericsson could drop the gloves and one-punched Dorsett, knocking him to the ice. Dorsett was bleeding from his nose...
Watching this play was pretty scary and pretty bizarre. At first it wasn’t exactly clear how Columbus Blue Jackets forward Artem Anisimov had been hurt, but upon seeing the replay, you could see how dangerous the play ended up being.
Anisimov was trying to cut around the net when he lost his balance, Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey was trying to reposition himself and Anisimov...
Anisimov was tied up with Kyle Quincey behind the Detroit net, Quincey fell on him and it appeared Anisimov's head hit the ice pretty hard.
