COLUMBUS, OHIO The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired defenseman Nikita Nikitin from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for defenseman Kris Russell, club Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Scott Howson announced tonight. Nikitin, 25, has collected four penalty minutes in seven games with St. Louis this season. The 6-3, 217-pound native of Omsk, Russia made his NHL debut with the Blues in 2010-11, collecting one goal and eight assists for nine points with 10 penalty minutes and a 1 plusminus rating in 41 games. He also tallied 3-11-14, 12 penalty minutes and was 1 in 22 American Hockey League games with the Peoria Rivermen during his first season playing in North America. St. Louis fifth pick, 136th overall, in the 2004 Entry Draft, Nikitin (pronounced nih-KEE-tihn) registered 13-48-61 with 213 penalty minutes and a 9 plusminus rating in 262 career games in the Russian Elite League and KHL with Avangard Omsk from 2004-10. He also represented Russia at the 2006 World Junior Championships, appearing in six games and helping his team win a silver medal. Russell was Columbus third pick, 67th overall, in the 2005 Entry Draft. He registered 18-71-89 and 124 penalty minutes in 288 games with the Blue Jackets, debuting with the club at the start of the 2007-08 season. He appeared in 12 games this season and tallied 2-1-3 and 13 penalty minutes. The Blue Jackets return to action Saturday when the club hosts the Winnipeg Jets. Game time from Nationwide Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET.
