Hurricanes @ Bruins - Game-7: Hurricanes Win 4-3 in OT

The No.1 seeded Boston Bruins have been eliminated from the playoffs, by the 6th seeded Carolina Hurricanes.  The Hurricanes held a 3-1 series lead at one point, but the Bruins looked like they got themselves back on track, tying the series up at three, and forcing a game-7 back home in Boston.

The scoring would go back-and-forth, with the game tied 3-3 at the end of regulation.  Game-7, in overtime - whoever scored next would advance.

The overtime was packed with action at both ends of the ice.  It was the kind of battle we hoped to see in the Penguins/Capitals game-7 (which turned out to be a 6-2 blow-out).  Both teams had their chances, but with just 1:14 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Scott Walker managed to put the puck past Bruins' Goalie Tim Thomas, ending the game, and putting the 2005-06 Stanley Cup Champions back into the Eastern Conference Finals.

Anaheim Ducks @ Detroit Red Wings - Game-7: Red Wings Win 4-3

The Anaheim Ducks knocked out the top-seeded San Jose Sharks, and came very close to sending the No. 2 Detroit Red Wings home as well.  They were a tough opponent the entire series for the defending Stanley Cup Champion Red Wings, who are arguably the best team in hockey.

  • Halfway into the game, the Red Wings would be leading 2-0.  In the second period, the Ducks got on the board on a goal from Teemu Sellane, and would trail by just 1-goal.
  • Detroit would respond with a goal just under two-minutes later, but the Ducks would get it back within a minute of their goal.  Early in the third period, the Ducks would tie the game 3-3.
  • With three minutes remaining in regulation, Dan Cleary scored his 3rd goal of the playoffs in what would turn out to be the game winning goal.

Nobody can be disappointed by the performance of the Anaheim Ducks.  They held the last playoff position, but played as if they held the top.  Nobody had it tougher than them, facing the top two teams in the NHL, and they hung in there every step of the way.  Not only did they eliminate the No.1 team, but forced the No.2 team to a game-7, requiring them to battle for the game winning goal with just 3-minutes left.  Now that's hockey!
