Chris Kelly scored on a long slapshot 1:18 into overtime and the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins beat the Washington Capitals 1-0 Thursday night in the opener of their first-round playoff series. Braden Holtby made 29 saves for the Capitals. Tim Thomas stopped all 17 shots he faced for Boston. The game was physical and scoreless until Thomas turned back a Washington attack early in the extra period. Brian Rolston dropped it for Benoit Pouliot to clear the zone and he pushed it up to Kelly, who slapped it over Holtby's glove for the game-winner.

Chris Kelly's Scores Overtime Winner, Gives Bruins 1-0 Series Lead Over Capitals (Video)

Through 60 minutes, neither the Bruins or the Capitals were able to put the puck on net. But a mere 78 seconds into sudden-death overtime and Chris Kelly pushed the Bruins to a 1-0 series lead. Kelly's breakaway was jumpstarted by a fantastic foot save by Bruins goalie Tim Thomas, who deflected the puck off his skate and out near the blue line. Benoit Pouliot got a handle on...

Another Tim Thomas Supernatural Performance Gets Bruins Off on Good Foot Against Capitals

Tim Thomas picked up right where he left off on Thursday night against the Capitals. The Bruins netminder followed up a legendary run to the Stanley Cup last season with another sparkling performance to open this season's run against Washington. Thomas pitched yet another shutout, showing that he may be ready for another sensational two months of goaltending. If that's the...

Defense fuels Bruins' OT Game 1 win

With the Bruins, it always starts with defense. Chris Kelly's overtime winner in Thursday's 1-0 Game 1 win over the Capitals was no different. Greg Zanon slowed up Marcus Johansson on a 1-on-1, Tim Thomas made the pad save on the shot, and then Joe Corvo started the breakout with a quick chip up the boards. From there, Brian Rolston moved it quickly to Benoit Pouliot, who...

Tim Thomas Gives Bruins Advantage Over Alex Ovechkin, Capitals in First Round

Last year, the Bruins' postseason opened in familiar territory with a matchup against the hated Habs. It ended in a strange and wonderful new place, though, with the Bruins sitting atop duck boats as huge crowds lined the streets to cheer on the club, and that big shiny Cup they hadn't held in 39 years. This season the playoffs begin a little differently. Boston opens as...

Capitals-Bruins Preview

At one end of the ice, playoff MVP Tim Thomas will be in goal for the defending champion Boston Bruins. At the other end, Braden Holtby will make his NHL playoff debut in the Washington Capitals' net. That should give Boston a big advantage in Thursday night's playoff opener. It also could be a trap if the Bruins are overconfident. ''Timmy's a great goalie...

Tim Thomas snubs the Capitals. BRUINS WIN.

What a game. We went through 27 adult diapers collectively at the DOY offices. The Bruins had their chances and just couldn't seem to get a bounce. The defense kicked so much as and absolutely stifled the Capitals. Ovechkin had just one shot. Caps fans are talking about how he was throwing the body around. Great. What does the scoreboard say though? The team with the most hits...

The Bruins snuck out of the TD Garden on Thursday night with a 1-0 win over the Capitals in overtime. While it's important to get that ever-important first win of the series, the B's struggled to figure out young netminder Braden Holtby -- that is, until Chris Kelly beat him with a slapper just a couple minutes into extra time. Do you have any questions for Jack Edwards?...
