Nick Johnson opened more eyes than anyone else at Bruins training camp and into the preseason schedule, but that wasn’t enough for the veteran forward to make the big club. Johnson was placed on waivers Sunday afternoon, as the Bruins reduced their roster to 23 players in advance of their season opener on Thursday against Tampa Bay. The Bruins made the move with the intention of sending Johnson to Providence, but he’ll have to clear waivers before he’s able to join the P-Bruins. Boston coach Claude Julien revealed the nature of that conversation with Johnson. “He’s a real quality person, and in his mind he says, ‘I’m going to keep working hard because I have a feeling I’m going to be back here this year,’” Julien said, according to the team’s website. “So there’s confidence in his voice and determination and that’s what you want to hear. “I know he’s disappointed and you would hope he’s disappointed, but at the same time he seemed to have the right attitude to work his way back here.” Johnson scored four goals in the preseason and survived initial roster cuts Saturday that sent four players to Providence. The competition for the 13th forward came down to Johnson and Jordan Caron. Filed under: Boston Bruins, Headlines, Mike Cole
