PLAYERS: Ken Holland
TEAMS: Detroit Red Wings
from Nicholas J. Cotsonika of Yahoo, To Wings GM Ken Holland, there is a simple reason why players such as Brunner go undiscovered for so long: The NHL is the best men’s league in the world, and players become men at different ages. Some are men at 18. Most grow into men later – some much later, some in out-of-the-way places. Brunner is listed at 5-foot-11 and 184 pounds. Now. How much smaller was he at draft age? And how many scouts saw him playing in Switzerland? And who could project how he would develop in the Swiss league, let alone how he would play in the NHL one day? Consider how all this came together. The Wings didn’t know about Brunner until Holland received a tip over email. He went way back with a guy named Stacy Roest. Holland knew him from the Medicine Hat Tigers, when Roest was playing in junior and Holland was scouting in western Canada. He had signed Roest to his first pro contract and later promoted him to the NHL. They live on the same British Co...

Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey scores goal off Jonathan Bernier's head (Video)

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey was credited with an unassisted goal in the first period of Wednesday night's game on a fluke play after his shot bounced into the air and off the back of Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Bernier's head into the net. Bernier stopped Quincey's slap shot with his glove, but the puck went into the air and took an unlucky bounce...

Injuries give prospects chance with Red Wings

DETROIT -- There's a silver lining for the Detroit Red Wings despite their injury woes this season. It's created an opportunity for a few of the young prospects to come up from the minors and get valuable NHL experience. Two of those players, forwards Tomas Tatar and Joakim Andersson, were having tremendous success in the American Hockey League before being called up. ...

Holmstrom still hanging around town

NOVI, Mich. -- You can take Tomas Holmstrom off the Detroit Red Wings but you can't take him out of the state of Michigan -- at least not yet. Holmstrom joined his closest friend, Nicklas Lidstrom, in retirement before the current season started. But unlike the former Wings captain, Holmstrom isn't quite ready to pack up his family and head back to Sweden. "I'm...

Lashoff Signs Three Year Deal - $725K per.

Like Brian Lashoff?  Well hopefully the answer was yes, because he's here to stay for a bit.  Lashoff received some security on Monday, when the Red Wings signed him to a three-year, $2.175 million extension. It's a one-way deal (NHL-salary only) all three years, with a salary-cap hit of $725,000. “He's played 18-to-20 minutes a night and a lot of nights he’s...

Valtteri Filppula ‘a Little Injured’, May Not Play vs. Kings on Wednesday

Because a day cannot go by without a Detroit Red Wings player suffering an injury, forward Valtteri Filppula is questionable for Wednesday’s game in Los Angeles against the Kings. Filppula did not practice Tuesday. Take it away, Helene St. James and Ansar Khan: #RedWings F Valtteri Filppula not on ice. GM Ken Holland says Filppula is a little injured, day-to-day — Helene St...

Brendan Smith Shaken Up on Elbow From Dustin Penner: Video

Let’s just say that the Detroit Red Wings did not get the benefit of many friendly whistles in a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night. The Wings found themselves facing a 5-on-3 on two separate occasions, totaling about four minutes of game time — and the Kings tied the game at one on the second of those two-man advantages, midway through the third. And yet, for...

Potential trade dealine target: Ian White

Rick Osentoski/Associated Press The Rangers are in desperate need of a reliable defenseman to shore up the bottom pairing. Right now, it looks like a competition between Steve Eminger and Matt Gilroy, and neither really instills confidence in the Rangers fan base. Eminger has been steady in previous seasons, but he hasn’t found the lineup consistently so far. Gilroy has had flashes...

After 2 Periods, Wings Up 1-0 Over Kings

Kyle Quincey with one of the stranger goals this season.  Puck is comes off of the glove hand of Bernier, hits him in the back of the head and directs into the back of the net. I can't pull a Malik and stick around for the end of the game, so feel free to use this post for post-game too. George does need a new laptop and will be shopping early tomorrow for one, so hopefully...

GDT - Game 20: Red Wings (9-7-3) at Kings (9-6-2) 10:00

After improbable back-to-back (convincing) wins over NSH (4-0) and VAN (8-3), DET are currently holding down the 8th spot in the West.  The PP has finally found a pulse, Jimmy is on fire, and the Chinese Fire Drill in the "D" zone is becoming a rarity - - at least at JLA. Of the Wings (9-7-3) 21 points, 15 were earned at home (7-4-1).  DET are a meager 2-3-2 on the...

Too Much D in the D?

With the eventual return of Colaiacovo Detroit will have 9 NHL defenseman on the roster. The obvious yet unpopular 1st move made would be to send Lashoff down to GR. That leaves 8 defenseman left. Kindl and Huskins could sit eating up roster space in the press box, but it may not be that simple. Lashoff has proven too valuable to the Red Wings to honestly send him down while claiming...

Kyle Quincey scores bizarre goal of Jonathan Bernier’s head

They say you should just throw the puck at the net, and this goal by Detroit Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey is exactly why.  His shot went of Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Bernier’s glove, bounced straight up in the air, hit off his head/back and bounced it.  Rob Scuderi tried to knock it out of the air but completely whiffed.  Bernier had no idea where the puck was and...

Red Wings beat Sharks 2-1 in shootout

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Damen Brunner scored the lone goal in the shootout and Jonas Gustavsson stopped all three shots in his first start of the season to lead the Detroit Red Wings to their third win in four games, 2-1 over the struggling San Jose Sharks on Thursday night. Patrick Eaves scored the equalizer midway through the third period and Gustavsson made 25 saves to get his...

Wings’ Streak Stopped at Two, Lose 2-1 to Kings

The Red Wings fall in a frustrating manner 2 – 1 to the L.A. Kings. Pressure on both ends of the ice was strong all game. Very few scoring chances were produced for either side and puck possession was the story of the game. The Wings’ first opportunity of the game came at [...]

GDT - Game 21: Red Wings (9-8-3) at Sharks (9-6-3) 10:30

I did not see the game last night, only glanced at the box score - a face-off violation?  Wings remain 0-fer on the road PP; and give up the 5-3 against.   The loss drops DET to 10th in the West.  Capt. Obvious says they have to start winning some of the road games, tonight would be a good time to begin. Continue reading "GDT - Game 21: Red Wings (9-8-3) at Sharks (9-6-3) 10:30"
