The Flyers will host the struggling Minnesota Wild tonight at the Wells Fargo Center in the first of two straight home games. The Wild are just 2-9-4 in their last 15 games played, including five of their last six. The Flyers, on the other hand, have won 5 of their last 6 games at home (5-1-0) and will look to continue their winning ways in front of the home crowd. Head coach Peter Laviolette will start Ilya Bryzgalov tonight in goal, and told reporters this week that he would stick with Bryzgalov as his number one goaltender. “I don’t use numbers, you know that. Bryz has gotten a majority of the starts. I don’t know if that answers your question or not…Bryz was brought here to be a horse, and he’s received a majority of the games. I don’t see that changing.” Bryzgalov is 16-10-3 with a 3.07 goals-against average and .891 save percentage this season. Darroll Powe returns to Philly for the first time since being traded for a 3rd round draft pick last June. Powe talked to reporters ...

Tim Panaccio: Bryz Goes; No Rinaldo

Ilya Bryzgalov goes tonight against the Minnesota Wild. He going to get the majority of starts in the second half, according to coach Peter Laviolette, while goalie coach Jeff Reese told me on MOnday he wants Bryz to play less than 60 games. Bryzgalov averaged 64 for 4 years in Phoenix but said he was a bit tired when the playoffs came around last season. Reese seemed to hint at that...

Wild's Koivu 'week-to-week' with injury

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Less than a week after learning it would be without its fourth-leading scorer, Pierre-Marc Bouchar (concussion symptoms), indefinitely, the Minnesota Wild on Monday got even worse news: Center Mikko Koivu, the team leader in points, said he is "week-to-week" because of an upper-body injury. Koivu, selected to his first All-Star Game last week, said...

Wild to be without Koivu for at least a few weeks

The Minnesota Wild will likely be without captain Mikko Koivu for at least two weeks, if not more. Coach Mike Yeo said Monday that Koivu has an upper-body injury, but declined to specify. Koivu appeared to hurt his left shoulder in Saturday's game at St. Louis. Yeo said Koivu's status will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis, and the coach added that he'll probably...

Wild will need to be physical to beat Philly

TUESDAY'S STORY LINE: Gritty. Hard Working. Physical. Sacrificing the body. Those are some words that described Minnesota's gutsy efforts Saturday in a 3-2 shootout loss to St. Louis. The Wild blocked 29 shots, won battles in the corners, instigated physical play and competed on every level with a very tough Blues team. Defenseman Justin Falk set the tone early in the first...

Giroux Scores 200th NHL Point; Flyers Dominate Wild 5-1

Wells Fargo Center- Earlier this week, Peter Laviolette spoke about his team's upcoming schedule, and how they could possibly make up some ground in the standings with 11 of their next 15 games coming at home. It certainly seemed like the Flyers had a home-ice advantage tonight as they defeated the Minnesota Wild at the Wells Fargo Center by a score of 5-1. They are now 6-1-0...

Wild Will Need Team Effort To Survive Koivu Injury

from Kent Youngblood at Russo’s Rants, Mikko Koivu is going on the Wild’s upcoming road trip to Philadelphia and Toronto. But it will be in an advisory role. Koivu, who hurt his left shoulder in the first period of Saturday’s game in St. Louis, is being called week-to-week with an upper body injury. But coach Mike Yeo said not to expect the Wild captain back before...

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: 1/18/12

In baseball terms, the Philadelphia Flyers had a hanging curveball of a matchup last night against a struggling Minnesota Wild team that was playing without its best forward and its number one goalie. Philly came in with plenty of motivation to get their pre-All Star Break mini-homestand (3 of 4 games) off to a strong start. To their credit, the Flyers blasted that hanging curve...

Minnesota Wild captain Mikko Koivu is expected to be sidelined for at least a month with a shoulder injury, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported on Monday. The All-Star suffered the injury following a check from St. Louis Blues forward Vladimir Sobotka during the first period of Saturday's game. Koivu, 28, leads the Wild in scoring with nine goals and 24 assists on the season.
