Found January 04, 2012 on FanAttic Network:

The Dapper Dan (Sportsman of the Year), founded by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s sports editor Al Abrams in 1936, is an annual award given to a Pittsburgh sports figure (both male and female) “who shined the brightest light on Pittsburgh in the preceding year.”

The name, Dapper Dan, comes from how the men were dressed who Abrams was trying to attract as members to what originally began as a sports club – “dapperly.”

Voting for this year’s award winner will be a tough choice for die-hard Pens fans since both head coach Dan Bylsma and goalie Marc-Andre Fleury have been named as finalists.

Both argueably had great seasons last year doing the city of Pittsburgh proud. Bylsma led the team to a 49-25-8 record and was ultimately awarded the Jack Adams trophy as the league’s most outstanding coach while Fleury was named the team’s MVP finishing his season with a personal record of 36-20-5 and 2.32 GAA (goals-against average).

Voting ends on Friday, January 13, 2012

The winners (for both SportsMAN and SportsWOMAN of the Year) will be announced at the 76th Annual Dapper Dan dinner and sports auction to be held on Monday, March 12, 2012 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh.

Tickets (as well as reservation for tables of 10) will be available later this month. Individual tickets are $250 (premium) and $125 (general) and TABLES OF 10 are $2,500 (premium) and $1,250 (general).

Fleury enjoys shots from Cooke

Matt Cooke lined up a juicy slap shot during Penguins practice Monday, let it fly, and was puzzled when it sailed past Marc-Andre Fleury as the goaltender stayed upright on his skates instead of sinking into a butterfly. "Are you too lazy to go down?" Cooke chastised Fleury. "After a day off [Sunday], I don't trust you not to hit me in the head. Maybe I'll...

Pittsburgh Penguins Can Improve Short-Term Problems With a Few New Years Resolutions

AP By Joe Depto (@PensDeptoTFP) To say 2011 was an exhausting calendar year for the Pittsburgh Penguins would be an arduous understatement. I certainly don’t need to remind even the most casual of hockey fan what circumstances the beginning of 2011 brought on for Sidney Crosby and the entire Penguins organization. After Evgeni Malkin healed his torn ACL (salt in the wound as far...

Penguins Notebook: Staal family tradition anything but good one

In fan voting, the stars don't appear to be aligned

The Penguins and NHL All-Stars have been close to synonymous for several seasons. A year ago, the club practically stole the fan voting, taking four of the six spots decided that way. This year? Crickets. Voting for the 2012 game, Jan. 29 in Ottawa, ended at midnight.
