Flame On After an underwhelming opening weekend, the Vancouver Canucks are back in action against the Calgary Flames in what should be a good bet for their first win of the year. Matchup: Vancouver Canucks (0-1-1) v Calgary Flames (0-2-0) Venue: Rogers Arena Time: 7:00 pm TV/Radio: Sportsnet, Team 1040 Game Notes Either the Calgary Flames or the Vancouver Canucks will leave Rogers Arena tonight with their first win of the year. Cory Schneider will battle Miikka Kiprusoff in net. Jarome Iginla will play career game number 1.191 tonight, tying for 97th all-time with Gilbert Perrault, Radek Dvorak and Marc Bergevin. The Sedins have combined for 124 points against the Flames in their career. The Sedins have combined for 124 points against the Flames in their career. What to watch: Calgary The Flames are trying to avoid losing three in a row to start the season for the first time since 2007-2008. Roman Cervenka will most likely make his Flames debut after sitting out opening weekend with a blood clot. Curtis Glencross scored twice on the powerplay against Anaheim. The Flames are still hoping they’ll catch lightning in a bottle one of these years with their underwhelming line-up before Jarome Iginla retires. They have a decent collection of wingers but lack depth down the middle to truly make them effective. On the blueline, newly signed Dennis Wideman should be decent but also makes $500k more than Alex Edler. Jay Bouwmeester, meanwhile, could be on the move now that teams can take back salary in deals. There’s an alternate universe where he signed with the Canucks and not the Flames all those years back and it’s scary. Line-up Curtis Glencross – Alex Tanguay – Jarome Iginla Sven Baertschi – Mikael Backlund – Mike Cammalleri Roman Horak – Matt Stajan – Lee Stempniak Blake Comeau – Steve Begin – Tim Jackman Mark Giordano – Jay Bouwmeester Chris Butler – Dennis Wideman Derek Smith – Cory Sarich Miikka Kiprusoff Leland Irving What to Watch: Vancouver The Canucks will go back to Cory Schneider, he of the 11.11 GAA and .643 sv pct. Mike Gillis sent Vancouver aflutter Monday when he told the Vancouver Sun a potential deal for Roberto Luongo is in place. Alex Burrows will line up at centre for what I believe is the first time in his career. Should be interesting. The Canucks’ penalty kill this year has been terrible at 3/7. It would really be in the Canucks’ best interest to win this game and get their first two points of the year before heading down to California for a three game road trip. They can call last weekend a mulligan if they start winning games. Otherwise, it’s an omen. Line-up Daniel Sedin – Henrik Sedin – Zack Kassian Chris Higgins – Alex Burrows – Jannik Hansen Mason Raymond – Jordan Schroeder – Dale Weise Aaron Volpatti – Manny Malhotra – Maxim Lapierre Dan Hamhuis – Kevin Bieksa Jason Garrison – Alex Edler Keith Ballard – Chris Tanev Cory Schneider Roberto Luongo Key Match-up It’s a pair of first-round rookies in Jordan Schroeder and Sven Baertschi. Schroeder got the call up earlier this week after an impressive Canucks camp, and looks to finally have a chance to prove himself at the NHL level. Baertschi meanwhile is something very rare indeed, a Flames prospect with star potiental. Both clubs are hoping they can give their respective teams a boost this year. Prediction This is a statement game for Vancouver, against a team they’ve manhandled for years. Smooth sailing tonight, 5-2. Schroeder picks up an assist. Calgary Flames vs. Canucks: Can’t whine about a win!

Love ‘ Em & Hate ‘Em Boxscore | Recap The shootout is a fickle beast. The glorified coin toss can be so random yet determines whether the 65 minutes prior was an effort good enough for a win or bad enough for a loss. For the second straight game, the Canucks blew a 2-0 lead to an Albertan team and decided the game in a shootout. On Sunday, the Oilers “won” and panic...

Vancouver Canucks vs. Calgary Flames moments in time…

Time to Renew the Rivalry Good afternoon, folks. The Canucks and Flames meet tomorrow and whenever these two teams get together, you can’t help but think of their rivalry, or the rivalry that once that once was.
