TEAMS: Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, Nashville Predators, Phoenix Coyotes, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings
I had a conversation with an anonymous source familiar with the situation last weekend about the lockout (ahh the proverbial "anonymous source" card) and received an inside look on the state of the NHLPA and Gary Bettman. This source has worked on four NHL teams since the early 90's, including a couple expansion teams, so I also had a word about the effect this lockout has had on smaller markets.
I just want to say, before continuing any further, let's not live an die by one man's word. This is purely an opinion from an inside source and not a guarantee that anything will be resolved within the next two weeks, so with that in mind let's continue.
According to the source, negotiations have come to a point where the NHLPA is torn. Donald Fehr was expected to walk in and literally change the dynamics of negotiations outright; however, at this point it just isn't the case. I was told that within the next two weeks it is expected that the players will forc...

Bettman Is The Problem
from Jack Todd at the Montreal Gazette,
Let’s face the truth, folks: Gary Bettman has become hockey’s worst enemy.
Bettman is now the author of three lockouts and the disastrous expansion into the Sun Belt, egomaniac, a man who would rather destroy the National Hockey League than form a workable partnership with the players. Under his watch, the NHL has already lost...
It’s High Time for Bettman to Admit Phoenix Is A Mistake
As Glendale, Arizona City Council convenes to vote on a restructured lease agreement between potential buyer Greg Jamison and the municipality, the future of the Coyotes in the Copper State is very much up in the air and it’s about time that Gary Bettman admits that hockey in Phoenix just won’t work out. But why won’t Bettman let [...]
Dear NHL Commish….
From: Paul Schneider An average hockey fan Evanston, IL. To: Gary Bettman, Commissioner, NHL 1185 Avenue of the Americas New York, NY 10036 Dear Mr. Bettman, I started writing this letter about a year ago to complement you on your stellar record as the league’s first commissioner. During your administration, [...]
Four Out Of Thirty Thoughts
from Elliotte Friedman of CBC,
1. Ready for some labour? Next Wednesday is a huge day with the NHL board of governors meeting in New York City. Will commissioner Gary Bettman reserve the most important part of the get-together for the highest levels only? Each team has one governor and at least two alternates with one exception -- the Phoenix Coyotes, who only have the latter...
Hump Day links... Just give me my hockey now!

Well there are quite a few news stores of note this morning in
the college and professional hockey world. The NHL Labor mess continues on and
is proving to be an absolute gong show and it appears that there is little
evidence that a solution is forth coming.
Like my friend Chris Wassel said...
Fix The Problem
from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province,
Gary Bettman is everything Canadian hockey fans revile.
He is not a hockey guy but he is the worst kind of empty suit: a corporate lawyer from New York. In two decades on the job, he's yet to demonstrate a passion or love for this game which is so deeply embedded in our national psyche. And, when you come right down to it, there...
NHL players vote in step toward dissolving union
TORONTO -- NHL players are a step closer to dissolving their union.
NHL Players' Association members voted this week to give the union's executive board the power to file a "disclaimer of interest" until Jan. 2, The Canadian Press said Friday.
The news agency, citing an unidentified source, said the vote drew more than the two-thirds of the required support. The...
Morning Line
“If I was a company being courted by the NHL today, or if I was advising a company being courted, I would be concerned.” The current commissioner [Gary Bettman, commissioner since 1993] has three work stoppages under his belt.”
-Michael Neuman, managing partner for Scout Sports and Entertainment. More from Terry Lefton and Christopher Botta of SportsBusiness Journal.
Easy Boys
from Ken Campbell of The Hockey News,
So far in this lockout, the owners have been placed under a gag order by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. As a result, there have been very few cracks in their ranks and, regardless of whether or not you side with Bettman and the owners, they have basically been able to remain consistently on message.
The members of the NHL Players...
Evening Line
The reason there’s no agreement yet is that Gary Bettman has made promises he can’t keep. And if he doesn’t keep them and loses half an NHL season — or more — in the process, he will be out of a job that pays him $8 million a year.
That’s why there’s been little negotiation from the NHL. That’s why there’s no hockey. And that’s why there won’t be hockey...
NHL Asked NBC To Not Broadcast Operation Hat Trick
Actions often speak louder than words. As the NHL and the players are stuck in a PR battle, it's easy for each side to spin things however they want them to appear. Actions, though, speak for themselves.
Some players made the best of the situation and helped to organize a charity game in Atlantic City, a trip that was not so convenient for many of the attendees (Henrik Lundqvist...

Travis Yost: Erik Karlsson? Still Erik Karlsson
Make sure to follow Travis on Twitter!
--
Erik Karlsson's one of the most electric blue line talents in the National Hockey League. So electric, in fact, Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr agreed early on to ensure that the entire world -- not just North America -- could watch the kid play.
Sigh.
Karlsson's been skating with Jokerit of SM-liiga in Finland during the NHL...
