Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen will miss the upcoming season as he continues to recover from a broken left heel suffered late last season. The 29-year-old Pitkanen missed the final 13 games of the 2012-13 season with the injury, which occurred in April in a game against Washington when he raced down the ice in an attempt to beat an icing call. Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford said earlier this month that Pitkanen might not be ready to start his sixth season with Carolina and that he would need another CT scan on his heel. The veteran defenseman has 57 career goals and 225 assists in nine NHL seasons with Philadelphia, Edmonton and Carolina. Carolina opens the regular season at home against Detroit on Oct. 4.

Matt Karash: Carolina Hurricanes "You Pick 'Em" roster poll + my odds & Joni well wishes

First, my heartfelt well wishes go out to Joni Pitkanen and his family. In my role as pretend hockey writer and analyst, I spend most of my words here trying to figure out this or that in terms of the Canes on-ice performance. But it is important to take a step back from that and remember there is a human part of all of this. I am wishing Joni a full a recovery and will absolutely...

Hurricanes begin camp with eye on playoffs

The Carolina Hurricanes wrapped up their first practice of the preseason Thursday by gathering in a ring at center ice. They skated into the circle two at a time and went one-on-one for loose pucks in what's essentially hockey's version of the Oklahoma drill. The message was clear: If the Hurricanes are going to finally get back to the playoffs, they need to get tougher...
