The Carolina Hurricanes have placed backup goalie Anton Khudobin on injured reserve with an unspecified lower-body injury. The team on Monday also recalled goalie Justin Peters from its AHL affiliate in Charlotte. Khudobin was hurt during the second period of a 5-3 loss to Phoenix on Sunday when he skated away from the net to play the puck. Coach Kirk Muller said after practice Monday that it was ''unfortunate ... to see him go off like that'' but ''hopefully, he's back sooner than later.'' Khudobin signed a one-year deal worth $800,000 in July to back up starter Cam Ward. Ward was given a regular day off Monday, so equipment manager Jorge Campos played goalie during practice.

Anton Khudobin heading to injured reserve after all

As reported yesterday, Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Anton Khudobin limped to the bench during Sunday’s game and it looked like they would be without their understudy to Cam Ward for a significant amount of time. According to the News & Observer’s Chip Alexander, the injury has proven to be the ‘best-case scenario’ under the circumstances, this from Hurricanes...

Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford said Monday that goalie Anton Khudobin would be placed on injured reserve but that his injury may not be as serious as first feared. Khudobin was injured Sunday in the second period against the Phoenix Coyotes when he left his net to play a puck then fell awkwardly. He was helped off the ice. Rutherford did not specify the nature...

Anton Khudobin Takes Awkward Spill, Helped Off Ice After Suffering Lower-Body Injury Against Coyotes (Video)

It has been a rough week for former Bruins goaltenders. Tim Thomas went down with a lower-body injury in Florida just five days ago, and now another familiar face has followed suit. Anton Khudobin has been sharing the duties between the pipes with Cam Ward this season for the Carolina Hurricanes, but in his third start, Khudobin was forced to exit the game early. After coming out...

Anton Khudobin  began his 2013-14 season by winning his first two starts with the Carolina Hurricanes after a successful campaign as the Boston Bruin’s back up goaltender. Against the Phoenix Coyotes, the 27 year old goaltender was given the nod to start on Sunday.  He turned aside 18 of 20 shots, but midway through the second period he seemed to have suffer either a groin or...

Carolina Hurricanes: Eric Staal must step up

Eric Staal (Photo credit to espn.com) Eric Staal is the current team captain for the Carolina Hurricanes. The sad part about that statement is that he’s put forth very little effort to help his team win. Sure the man has talent, but is that enough to carry his team to an improvement in their showing this season? I would like to think the answer is no. Please, allow me to explain...

Jordan Staal Hits Post, Somehow Doesn’t Score as Goal Drought Continues (Video)

Jordan Staal is no stranger to goal scoring. Through his first seven seasons, the Carolina Hurricanes alternate captain has lit the lamp 130 times. This season, though, things just aren’t going Staal’s way. Entering Sunday, the centerman had been held scoreless through his first five games, although to be fair, his 12 shots on goal don’t even rank in the top 30 of the league...

Tuomo Ruutu is Back and On the Top Line

Injuries have been an issue for Tuomo Ruutu in the past. That is why it was that much more troubling that Ruutu did not make his season debut until Sunday. However what was even more of an issue, is that the Carolina Hurricanes were on the secretive side regarding the nature of his injury. We have become used to teams dodging specifics on injuries, and this was no different. The...

Hurricanes Week in Review: 10/6 - 10/13

The NHL season is a little under two weeks old and with that, we have our first weekly review of the Hurricanes underlying numbers. This is something I hope to have up every Monday but the amount of games the Hurricanes have in a given week might cause me to make some adjustments. This week, we have five games to look at (Philadelphia through Phoenix) so there is plenty of data to...

Video- Sounds Of The Game?

I am not sure what to call this, but it isn't a goal call that's for sure. All three Carolina goals from today on the Canes website have the same, uh, soundtrack and I am not sure why since the Canes TV crew did the game. I get the the long Woooo, I know of that tradition, but the other sounds, I have no idea where that is coming from. Carolina lost 5-3 to Phoenix and...

Hurricanes rally but can't edge Blackhawks in shootout

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Playing the last two Stanley Cup champs in the span of five days was no easy task, and the Carolina Hurricanes (2-2-3) wanted to make sure they got off to a good start with high energy against the reigning champion Chicago Blackhawks (4-1-1) on Tuesday. The energy? That was there. But the good start? Not so much. It was two defensive mistakes -- first on a breakaway...

Matt Karash: Hurricanes Game Day Preview: Vs. Chicago--Finish line game for 1st stretch

Before the season started, I said that the first checkpoint for the Carolina Hurricanes 2013-14 season was after the first 7 games. This first run featured 5 games against 2013 playoff teams including 3 of the 4 semi-finalists. These 7 games would provide an initial measure of the Canes ability to compete and win points against good hockey teams. It would also be a key stretch...

Hawks top Hurricanes 3-2 in shootout

Duncan Keith turned on the afterburners hit the defensive zone in a blur and broke up a three-on-one chance by the Hurricanes. The sequence in the second period appeared to be just another strong play by the Blackhawks who were on cruise control. But in the end the veteran defenseman’s effort turned out to be a key moment of a 3-2 shootout victory over the Hurricanes on Tuesday...

Ruutu off injured reserve, set to play

The Canes on Sunday activated forward Tuomo Ruutu from injured reserve. Ruutu has missed the first five games with a leg injury. He was placed on injured reserve Sept. 29.
