The Carolina Hurricanes have signed first-round draft pick Elias Lindholm to a three-year, entry-level contract. Lindholm signed his deal during a ceremony Monday at team headquarters. The versatile forward will make $832,500 at the NHL level or $70,000 in the minors in each of the three years. He will receive a signing bonus of $277,500. Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford says Lindholm will have the opportunity to start the season with the team ''and I will be shocked if he doesn't.'' Rutherford says Lindholm can play all three forward positions. Carolina took Lindholm with the fifth pick of the draft last month. The 18-year-old Lindholm had 11 goals and 19 assists last season in the Swedish Elite League.

Matt Karash: Canes prospect profile: Elias Lindholm

Elias Lindholm officially inked his entry-level deal yesterday afternoon. The team web site has video of media Q&A with him and Jim Rutherford at the signing. Biggest takeaway was Jim Rutherford seemed very confident that Lindholm would be playing at the NHL level this season. I regularly (and justifiably) get accused of being long-winded, so here is the real short version...

Carolina's best and worst defense pairings, 2013

Carolina fans should know this well but it takes a lot of trial and error to get the right line combos and defense pairings. Some trios click instantly (see the first line Tlusty-E.Staal-Semin) while others take more time to gel (see almost every bottom-six unit). This was especially the case last season with the team cycling through so many different players and they were basically...

Inside Carolina's Special Teams Woes: the Power Play

In my analysis of the Hurricanes, most of my emphasis is placed on the team's performance at even strength. Why? Because the majority of the game is played there and it has been shown that owning the battle at even strength leads to more wins. However, special teams are just as important to consider. Some teams are able to get by with a sub-par special teams but it's very...

Matt Karash: Are the Canes doubling down on the 2012-13 team?

Starting Tuesday, I will put up a few “Canes prospect previews” with Elias Lindholm being first. I have the first and most of the 2nd written, so hopefully I can hold schedule and get 2-4 up during the week. Disclaimer for below: Yes. I realize that we are still more than a month from training camp and that a lot could happen in terms of free agent signings or trades...
