One night the Washington Capitals are outside the top eight in the Eastern Conference, the next they're atop the Southeast Division. First-year coach Adam Oates, though, knows how easily that can shift in the other direction. The visiting Capitals try to continue their postseason push Saturday night when the Florida Panthers look to extend their season-best winning streak to four. Washington (18-17-2) was out of the playoff picture heading into Thursday's game against the New York Islanders. However, with newcomer Martin Erat making his Capitals debut, they jumped back into the division lead with a 2-1 shootout victory and a 4-1 Winnipeg loss at Montreal. The Capitals and Jets are tied for the Southeast lead with 38 points, but Washington has two games in hand. Carolina and Tampa Bay are four points back.
