MVN:
Once again, this series is living up to all the hype. Luckily for Caps fans, it's going our way... for now!
What more can you ask for? Alex Ovechkin with his first playoff hat trick. Sidney Crosby with his first playoff hat trick. Simeon Varlamov with another amazing performance in net and the Caps with a 2-0 series lead headed to Pittsburgh.
Now, this was huge for the Caps and us fans. We know this series is far from over. The Pens and Caps are two very good evenly matched teams. It's been a small margin of victory for each of the first two games and they could have gone either way. I expect the Pens to come out on fire on Wednesday night. They've scored first in both games, but the second goal has been the difference.
Now on to Crosby. My goodness, what a freakin baby he is. First, he won't give a lick of credit to Varlamov on his amazing save in Game 1 and his super performance in Game 2. Then after Ovie scored the hat trick goal, Crosby has a little chat with the ref. What did he say? Well...
"People kept throwing hats," Sidney Crosby said tonight. "I was just asking if he could make an announcement to ask them to stop. I mean, the first wave came and then I think they were all pretty much picked up, and then more started coming. So for us, we just wanted to make sure we kept kind of moving and kept the game going, wanted to try to get back in it. So wasn't complaining about anything."
Right. Dude, I know you are a young guy and you are the pretty boy of the league and are extremely talented, but why do you have to be a whiner like your owner. Like Lebron James, you are arguably the best or easily in the Top 3 players in the league. You don't have to do all the complaining. You are good enough. Just play the game.
Okay, now back to Varly. You can give Ovie the credit for the big goals, but those goals may not have meant much if not for the sensational play in net by Varlamov. His 2 saves on the Pens 2-man advantage were every bit as good as the stick save on Saturday. The pad stop on Crosby and the glove save on Gonchar kept the Caps down just one when a 2-0 deficit may have been too much to overcome. His saves in the 2nd period with the Pens up 2-1 were huge as well. He moves laterally so well and while he'll still give up rebounds, it's up to the Caps defense to tie up their man or clear the puck. The Caps did a decent job of that in Game 2, but I'd say on Crosby's first two goals, Mike Green did not do his job.
On both goals, Crosby was able to stand right in front and bang away at rebounds. Green was there each time and failed to tie him up. He didn't have to take a penalty, but my goodness, get a body on him and make it tougher.
Now we move on to Game 3. It will be tough. A win and the Caps will be in great shape, but any long time Capitals fan knows that we could be up 3-0 in games and 3-0 in the 3rd period of Game 4 and we still would not feel confident. We have been up 2-0 and 3-1 against this franchise many times before and we all remember the heartbreak. Plus, you know the Rangers were thinking good things up 2-0 about 2 weeks ago and we all know what happened there. Just steal 1 on the road and we will have our chances to end this one and exorcise the demons. But it aint over. We are just halfway there.
