Concussions are one of the top problems that the NHL has been dealing with for almost two decades now. The topic continues to dominate league meetings and has spurned new rules on the ice, new medical rules about head injuries, and lots of new attempts to protect the players head with equipment like helmets and mouth guards. This past season we all heard the statistical research by the league about concussions and how most were the result of accidental contact. Not to bore you with stats, but at the All-Star game last season the NHL revealed statistics on concussions in the NHL during the season to date. The numbers said that 44% of the 80 concussions came from “legal hits to the body”. Additionally legal checks to the head only caused 14% of the concussions in the league.
