This past Sunday was an offensive success for the Dallas Stars organization. Having nine picks in seven rounds, the Dallas Stars selected six forwards, two defensemen, and one goaltender. Nichushkin representing the new Stars look after being drafted in the first round. The draft started off as a success for Dallas once they realized they were able to draft Valeri Nichushkin as the tenth overall pick. Nichushkin was expected to be drafted earlier, but he fortunately fell to the tenth pick. As I mentioned in an article a couple weeks ago, Nichushkin is a dominant player who is most highly noted for his physicality and puck control. Similar to the puck control dominance of Nichushkin, Jason Dickinson (the 29th overall pick for the Dallas Stars) is strong on and off the puck. Both of which are more of a ‘north-south, crash-the-net’ type of players. As a continuation from the latter part of last season with the Dallas Stars, these two players will fit in well with the new offense that the Stars have been using. With a second pick in the second round, Dallas drafted goaltender Philippe Desrosiers. This is a move that most of us were expecting after a weak performance by Dallas’ backup goaltending this past season (leaving very little rest for Kari Lehtonen). In the third round, the Stars picked up their first defenseman in the draft. Swedish Niklas Hansson was drafted 68th overall. One thing that really stands out is his impressive plus/minus. Over 39 games this past season with his hockey club, Hansson was +26. After Stars GM, Nill, stated a need for defensemen, I was personally surprised that Dallas didn’t pick up a defenseman until the third round. However, the availability of strong offensive players, plus a goalie that could help with a lack of depth in that area, it seems that Dallas may try to make up their lack of defense in the free agency.
