Hockeytown’s expectations are high for rookie forward Damien Brunner, as evidenced by Mike Babcock’s decision to start Brunner on the Detroit Red Wings’ top line with Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. Monday night, in Detroit’s 4-3 shootout win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, Brunner flashed some of his potential. The 26-year-old fired a team-leading six shots and generated multiple chances — including a beautiful move in the first period, in which he nearly slipped one past Blue Jackets’ netminder Sergei Bobrovsky. He later put the Wings’ first win of 2013 on the board, breaking a scoreless drought in Round 4 of the shootout. Brunner made that happen by pulling off a slick Pavel Datsyuk-like dangle on Bobrovsky, faking to his right, then dragging the puck back around a sprawling Bobrovsky to tuck a shot inside the goal post. Check out the first of what Detroit hopes is many highlights from Brunner:
