The long-awaited Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium will finally take place on Jan. 1, 2014. The two teams and the NHL held a joint announcement Sunday to discuss the event (again), and the Red Wings unveiled the jerseys they will wear next New Year’s Day.

Pavel Datsyuk had the first and last laugh Friday night as the Detroit Red Wings picked up two crucial points in a 3-2 overtime win against the Avalanche.
Datsyuk opened up the scoring in the first period when he picked up his 12th goal of the season on the power play after a nice feed from Johan Franzen. But it was his second goal that turned out to be the game winner in overtime...
Pavel Datsyuk knocked in a rebound at 4:45 of overtime, and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Friday night to hold onto seventh place in the Western Conference.
Datsyuk, who had two goals, ended the game after Henrik Zetterberg put a shot on net that goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere didn't cover. Datsyuk reached out to poke in the puck as defenseman Matt...
The Detroit Red Wings have recalled Riley Sheahan from their American Hockey League affiliate.
The move was made Saturday, a day before Detroit hosts the St. Louis Blues.
Detroit drafted Sheahan in the first round of the 2010 NHL draft and he played in one game for the Red Wings last year. He had 35 points in 67 games this season for the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Amongst this morning/early afternoon's Red Wings-related news:
The Wings had recalled Riley Sheahan on an "emergency" basis as the team feared that Henrik Zetterberg (groin) might not be able to play during Sunday's 1-0 loss to St. Louis, so the press release the Wings sent out to their email list on Monday offered no surprise:
RED WINGS REASSIGN RILEY SHEAHAN...
After the 2012-13 NHL lockout shortened the season and cancelled the Leafs vs. Red Wings Winter Classic, today, the NHL announced that the two teams will meet in the 2014 Winter Classic. They also unveiled the jersey's which, like any other Winter Classic Jerseys in the past, look pretty sick. The Leafs and Red Wings will face each other four times next year as division rivals...
from Ansar Khan of Mlive,
“I thought Mule was fantastic in the middle, dominated the faceoff circle, really played well, went head-to-head against (Matt) Duchene all night long and was very good,'' Babcock said.
Babcock paired Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg together in an effort to energize the team following Thursday's 4-2 loss at Phoenix. He had Franzen...
It's all about regulation or overtime wins for the Red Wings, and in what may or may not have been a make-or-break-the-season game--with Sunday's opponent, the Blues, pulling ahead of the Wings in the Western Conference standings...
The Detroit Red Wings dominated the first period against the Colorado Avalanche, nearly gave the game away in the second and third periods...
I've already received some Tweets and will certainly receive some emails regarding the mysterious email the Red Wings sent their fans on Saturday night, stating that they will make an "announcement" at 10:30 AM EDT today (and that the announcement will be streamed on DetroitRedWings.com and re-shown in snippets during today's matinee between the Wings and Blues...
I would yell and scream at the Red Wings for engaging in awfully stupid lateral passing up the ass, shooting an unbelievable number of single, un-screened shots on Brian Elliott (who had a ridiculously easy night thanks to no butts in front, no screens and no rebound attempts from the Wings, never mind sustained pressure by the Wings) and essentially playing like they didn't...
The Red Wings drop yet another crucial game 1-0 to the St. Louis Blues, who drop them to 8th in the West. This playoff-intensity game was a defensive battle from the get-go, though not as boring as some we’ve seen this season. Both teams grinded away at one another, clearing pucks away from [...]

The Red Wings' game against the St. Louis Blues today (12:30 PM EDT, NBC Sports/NHL Network Canada/97.1 FM, and today the Wings are partnering with the Make-A-Wish Foundation at the Joe today) makes for "good TV" and "easy storytelling") for those without a rooting interest, for several reasons:
After today's Winter Classic presser, a pair of teams...
