As the NHL lockout drags on with no end in sight, many players have elected to take their services elsewhere and continue to play hockey. Many Detroit Red Wings have gone that route and are now playing outside the NHL. By my count (and the information isn’t as easy to find as you would think) 12 Red Wings are currently playing hockey.  Of those 12, three are leading their team in points. But they aren’t the three players you have in mind.  Star players Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg are playing well, but neither lead their respective teams.  The team leaders are Damien Brunner, Gustav Nyquist, and Jan Mursak. Now, the talent level these guys are facing isn’t near what they would be seeing in NHL action, but it’s good to see them playing at a high level, regardless of who it’s against. Hopefully, I can begin writing about these guys playing games wearing the Winged Wheel soon, but for now I’ll update you on what they’re doing for their current team. Pavel Datsyuk, CSKA Moscow (KHL) Datsyuk is one of the NHL’s stars, and things are no different for him in his home country of Russia.  Datsyuk continues to score and pass with the best in the world, and has racked up 7 goals and 19 assists in 21 games for his Moscow-based team. Henrik Zetterberg, Zug (Swiss-A) Zetterberg elected to play in the top Swiss league during the lockout, and has been very effective in the action he has seen.  Zetterberg has played just 14 games, but has tallied 11 goals and 11 assists already. Damien Brunner, Zug (Swiss-A) Brunner and Zetterberg have been tearing it up while playing on the same team for the past several weeks.  Brunner leads Zug with a whopping 41 points in 24 games.  He has scored 23 goals to go with 18 assists and looks to be a very promising signing for Detroit. Valtteri Filppula, Jokerit Helsinki (Sm-liiga league) Filppula had scored six goals and tallied nine assists in 15 games back in his home country of Finland.  Unfortunately, he sprained his MCL and is out for the next 4-6 weeks. Drew Miller, Braehead Clan (EIHL) Miller opted to travel to England to play hockey, and has played well in the 13 games he has played.  He has totaled 8 goals and 10 assists and has scored five goals in his last four games. Kyle Quincey, Denver Cutthroats (CHL) Quincey didn’t leave the U.S. to play in Europe, instead staying in Denver to be closer to home.  Being a veteran, Quincey has seen limited action, but has played 12 games, scored twice, and amassed nine assists. Nyquist wears #13 for Grand Rapids, and his recent play has drawn comparisons to another #13… Gustav Nyquist, Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) Nyquist is one player that had a two-way contract, and is leading the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate to an 11-6 record.  The Griffins are leading the Midwest division, and Nyquist has 8 goals and 11 assists in 17 games. Brendan Smith, Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) Smith is playing alongside Nyquist, and playing no less remarkably.  Smith has also appeared in 17 games, totaling three goals and nine assists. Tomas Tatar, Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) Tatar did not see as much action for Detroit last year as his two teammates did, but along with Nyquist and Smith, has been playing at a high level for Grand Rapids.  Tatar has scored 10 goals to lead the Griffins.  He also has eight assists in 17 games. Cory Emmerton, SaiPaLappeenranta (Sm-liiga league) Emmerton headed to Finland along with Filppula, and also got injured.  His broken finger required surgery, and he’ll be sidelined for another six weeks. Jakub Kindl, HC Pardubice (Czech League) Kindle has performed poorly thus far in the Czech Republic, making me worried about his future.  Kindle has failed to score in 21 games and has only six assists.  The most troubling stat on Kindl is his dismal -7 rating. Jan Mursak, Ljubljana Olimpija HK (EBEL) Mursak is another player that has led his team.  In 19 games, Mursak has totaled 10 goals and 22 assists.   Follow me on twitter @ScottPeceny
