NHL Injury News:
The Detroit Red Wings will be without forwards Stephen Weiss and Johan Franzen when they take on the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday night.
Franzen will be missing his fourth consecutive game with an illness and has been placed on short-term injured reserve. He has not played since November 1st in Calgary and even that night he was only able to log 9:05 of ice time as he reported feeling nauseous. The move is retroactive so he will be eligible to return as soon as he is healthy enough to play.
According to Red Wings beat writer Ansar Khan, Weiss will be missing his first game with a groin injury. He is considered day-to-day but is expected to miss a week to ten days. Weiss was able to play over 18 minutes in Thursday nightâs loss to Dallas but was not able to practice Friday.
Weiss and Franzen join injured defensemen Jonathan Ericsson (shoulder) and Brendan Smith (shoulder) in the press box for the Wings. Although both Weiss (2g, 1a, -3) and Franzen (2g, 3a, -2) are not off to the start the Wings had hoped for, according to coach Mike Babcock, their absence will leave a considerable hole. Without these two forwards, the Wings are left without a proven second line center on the line with Daniel Alfredsson as Babcock has no plans to break up top forwards Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk.
Weiss was one of the Wingsâ free agent signings this summer as they essentially swapped for Valtteri Filppula who then signed with the Lightning. While Weiss has struggled, Filppula has played well centering Tampaâs second line (6g,6a). Weiss has picked up his play in the face-off circle of late, winning 64% of his draws over the last five games after having a rough open to the season.
The Red Wings will need others to step up Saturday night as the welcome the division leading Lightning to Joe Louis Arena where they have not won in their last four games (0-1-3).

DETROIT -- According to defenseman Nik Kronwall, the Detroit Red Wings' fifth straight home loss can be boiled down to a punchless power play during the second period Saturday.

This is of course the one question those of you who've been wondering about Steve Yzerman's participation in the Winter Classic Alumni Showdown wanted to hear the answer to, and in typical Yzerman fashion, he gave 97.1 the Ticket's Jeff Riger a non-answer:

I'm still feeling quite dreadful today, and ahead of tonight's game between the Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning (7 PM, FSD/SUN/97.1 FM), I cannot deny that addressing Johan Franzen's status from an, "I am open about having an anxiety disorder" perspective was less than pleasant.
I don't think this will make things any better: Valtteri Filppula's...
The Tampa Bay Lightning are in Detroit for their first of four meetings with the Red Wings this year. The Bolts (11-4-0) and Red Wings (9-5-3) have risen to the top of the new Atlantic Division in very different ways. TonightâÂÂs contest between the new rivals should be a good one, as the Lightning look to win their fourth straight game.
