NEWARK, N.J. -- Veteran goaltender Martin Brodeur stopped 21 shots for his 658th career victory and 120th shutout, leading the New Jersey Devils to a 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night in the Devils' home opener of the shortened season. Travis Zajac, David Clarkson and Ilya Kovalchuk (on a penalty shot) scored goals for the Devils, who improved to 2-0 and won for the 17th time in 30 home openers. The Devils are 17-8-5 in home openers but won for the first time in an opener at the Prudential Center. The Devils are now 1-3-1 in home openers in Newark. Kovalchuk, who arrived late for the abbreviated training camp, had a goal and an assist for the winners. It was also the fifth straight win for the Devils over the Flyers. The Devils won the final four games of the Eastern Conference semifinal series a year ago, taking the series in five games.
