In one of the final roster moves before the regular season begins on Saturday, the New Jersey Devils traded center David Steckel to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a fourth round pick, and then signed tryout Petr Sykora to a one year deal. Steckel was acquired from the Capitals at the trade deadline last season in the move that included sending Jason Arnott to Washington. In 18 games with New Jersey, Steckel managed just one goal and a -3 rating while posting a 56 percent faceoff success rate. Sykora was the "feel good story" of training camp, returning to New Jersey for a second stint after being a member of the 2000 Stanley Cup team. Sykora played well in camp,  making his way up the Devils depth chart and eventually playing with Zach Parise and Patrik Elias on the team's first line.
