Jaromir Jagr’s first winning goal for the Devils was a record-breaker. Scoring on a second-period breakaway, Jagr surpassed Phil Esposito’s NHL record with his 119th career game-winning goal as the Devils edged the Eastern Conference-leading Tampa Bay Lightning, 2-1, tonight at Prudential Center. Martin Brodeur posted his second straight victory, preserving the win with a left-pad save on Valtteri Filppula alone in front with 6:45 remaining. "The expectation on Marty is always pretty high. The bar is pretty high with him," coach Pete DeBoer said. "I’m not worried about Marty. I’m worried about building on our team game." The Devils (3-5-4) posted successive wins for the first time this season. Defenseman Anton Volchenkov was called for interference on Alex Killorn 21 seconds into the second period, but the Devils scored while killing off the penalty. Adam Henrique blocked a pass from Tampa Bay’s Matthew Carle at the left point and carried the puck up ice. After a cross-ice pass to Patrik Elias in the left circle, Henrique got a return feed from the veteran forward and beat goalie Ben Bishop from the right circle at 1:36. It was Henrique’s fourth goal of the season. Coach Pete DeBoer said he has been pleased with Henrique’s play so far this season. "I think so. There is always room for improvement," DeBoer said. "Adam is a guy who is going to get you 20 goals. For me it’s what else is he doing on the ice. It’s that shift-to-shift compete level, being hard to play against and really being an extension of our team identity. That’s the consistency we’re looking for." Playing the puck behind his net at 5:12, Brodeur lost it to Flippula. Teddy Purcell wound up with a scoring chance at the right post, but Brodeur scrambled back in time. Damien Brunner redirected an Adam Larsson shot from the right point at 10:25, but Bishop made the stop.
