It was about time the Devils got a break on goaltender Cory Schneider’s behalf. With the Devils’ goal production again slowing to a trickle, it looked like Schneider was going to get only one goal of offensive support again Saturday night. Then, a Marek Zidlicky slap shot deflected in off the top of Travis Zajac’s left shoulder with 6:57 left in regulation to snap a tie and propel the Devils to a 2-1 win over the Islanders at Nassau Coliseum. It was a well-earned victory for Schneider, who made 30 saves to snap his personal five-game winless streak (0-3-2). The Devils climbed back to NHL .500 (16-16-8) and can close out the first half of their season – and 2013 – a game over the break-even mark if they can beat Pittsburgh on Tuesday afternoon. “I think we needed this as a group,” Schneider said. “It’s a big two points for us. We’ve been stringing some points here together, which is nice, but we couldn’t settle for one. I think we needed the two. For me personally, I want to win. I don’t enjoy losing. I don’t enjoy coming close. You play the game to win, but you can’t do it without the guys in front of you.” It was just the fifth win of the season for Schneider in 18 starts (5-8-5) and his first since a 1-0 overtime victory over Buffalo on Nov. 30. It looked for a while Saturday as if he might have to win 1-0 again.
