The New Jersey Devils placed veteran D Colin White and recently acquired F Trent Hunter on waiver. The move is a precursor to buying out both players if thy clear waivers. White had been a staple on the Devils blue line since his call up form Albany during the 1999-2000 season but an influx of young defenseman has made him expendable. According to Tom Gulliti, Lou Lamoriello told White after the season that he would be trying to trade him and if he couldn’t make a deal he would buy the 33 year old out.  If bought out the Devils will owe White $2 million, spread over two years. Hunter whom New Jersey received in exchange for Brian Rolston last week was also aware of the possibility he may not play for the Devils. New Jersey’s depth on the right side left little room for the injury plagued vet. Hunter’s buy out price would be just over $2.6 million spread over four season for an average of $666,667 per year.
