Bryan Murray has been summarily roasted for his work in the summer of 2009, when he sent Dany Heatley to the San Jose Sharks for the seemingly paltry return of Milan Michalek, Jonathan Cheechoo, and a 2nd round pick. It was a terribly handled situation from beginning to end, what with every ounce of it playing out publicly, from Heatley's initial trade request to Murray's failed attempt to send him to the Edmonton Oilers. By the time Heatley landed in San Jose, it looked like he had brokered his own deal and Murray had been stuck with a terribly negotiated return courtesy a player with no GM experience. In the two years following, the trade only looked worse. Michalek managed only 66 games in both years, scoring 34 and 33 points, respectively. Jonathan Cheechoo had 5 goals and 14 points in his lone season before the Senators bought out the final year of his contract. And that 2nd round pick was traded for 18 games of Andy Sutton. In short, at the end of last season, it looke...

Ottawa Senators Player Chris Neil Penalized for Diving (Video)

The Capitals beat the Senators last night 5-3. This is Ottawa Senators Player Chris Neil taking a stick to the midsection by Alex Ovechkin. Or was it. Ovechkin was simply skating down the ice to catch up with the play. The stick barely looks like it touches Neil and you can see Neil look to his left to see where the referee is before he goes down to the ice. Neil was eventually...

I NOW Consider Daniel Alfredsson A Hall Of Famer

One longterm question that I like to think about is which current NHL players will make the Hockey Hall of Fame and at which point in their career have they cemented that honor regardless of what happens in the remainder of their career. I think Daniel Alfredsson has recently surpassed this threshold. Alfredsson is the first line right winger with the Ottawa Senators. He currently...

Alex Ovechkin cup checks Chris Neil

Check out this spear by Alex Ovechkin, that is unacceptable and it will be interesting to see if the league will suspend Ovechkin for his spear on Ottawa Senators tough guy Chris Neil. The video doesn't lie, that was a blatant spear and if Ovechkin doesn't like being checked he should take a number and get Neil back the correct way. To add injury to insult...

Filatov's Time In Ottawa Drawing to a Close?

Reports from this morning's practice indicated that the team's line combinations remain unchanged from Monday night's win against the Tampa Bay. Under normal circumstances, this wouldn't be particularly surprising but for most of the game, the trio of Colin Greening, Jason Spezza and Bobby Butler was pretty ineffective. So much so that when the Senators fell one goal...

Video: Foligno Scores One-Handed Beauty

Nick Foligno has inserted his name on the ballot for goal of the year. Foligno picked up a pass in the neutral zone and beat a Washington Capitals defense man along the boards and then dangled through the slot. After powering through the slot Foligno cut below the goal line and reached back with one hand to tuck the puck past Capitals goaltender, Tomas Vokoun. The Senators went on...

Something About Ikea - @steffeG Files From Sweden

For this article, I asked Swedish hockey fan @steffeG to cover last night's Swedish supermatch of the season. Here's what he filed: Thursday night was the much anticipated night of the big Sens prospect showdown in the Swedish Elite League: Jakob Silfverberg's Brynäs visiting Mika Zibanejad's Djurgården. Everyone in Sweden was in their most comfortable chairs for...

West Coast Express: 5 Reasons to Hate the Ottawa Senators

It’s 2011 Vancouver Canucks vs. Ottawa Senators (West vs. East) smack talk time. Next up is the Sens, and Richard has 5 reasons he can’t stand their hockey team. It seems strange but the Ottawa Senators don't usually sell out. The problem is they have no identity. What about their fateful decision to keep Wade Redden over Zdeno Chara. How's that look now?

Alfredsson all-star appearance 'would be huge'

Daniel Alfredsson hardly needs to be reminded about the impending milestone. "It's close. It's coming up quick," the Ottawa Senators captain said with a knowing grin in reference to his 39th birthday, which arrives on Sunday. Now i...

Puck Daddy chats with Minnesota’s Kyle Brodziak about underestimating Wild, being a perfectionist and Heatley’s turtleneck

Kyle Brodziak doesn't watch a lot of episodic television when the Minnesota Wild are traveling, but one show has hooked him: "Gold Rush Alaska" on the Discovery Channel. "I started watching it with my wife last year," he said. "You just want them to do so good, and it seems like everything goes wrong. But you hope in the end they do well." It&...
