One day after Detroit Red Wings defenseman Brian Rafalski announced his retirement, another American-born, long-time NHL star is hanging up his skates.
New York Islanders captain Doug Weight today officially called it a career after 19 NHL seasons, and will remain with the team as an assistant coach and an advisor to GM Garth Snow.
Weight, 40, was a second round pick of the New York Rangers in 1990, and began his career with the Blueshirts in 1990-91, making his debut in one game during the 1991 playoffs. He would however make the team full time the following season, but at the 1993 trade deadline was dealt to the Edmonton Oilers for Esa Tikkanen.
He would go on to play over eight seasons with the Oilers, where he would blossom into a star. He had his best offensive seasons in Edmonton, earning a reputation as one of the best playmakers in the league.
