With Training camp in Traverse City opening on Saturday, the Red Wings have found out some more interesting news to start the young season. Veteran forward Kris Draper will not skate at least for today as the staff has listed him as day-to-day to start the young season.

Draper injured his groin on Saturday, and has not received any tests according to General Manager Ken Holland. Draper will be battling for one of the final forward spots on the team this Training Camp and is a likely favorite to hold down a wing position on the fourth line. Having Datsyuk and Zetterberg on the same line this season could open a centering position on the fourth line, but that could also go a younger talent on the roster. Justin Abdelkader was given a two year contract this off-season with the hopes that he could take the reigns as the third line center, before the signing of veteran Mike Modano.

There has been no timetable set for Draper’s return, but since it’s so early, it will be interesting to see how quickly he gets back into action, knowing he is battling for fourth line minutes.

Draper is battling Darren Helm, Drew Eaves, Justin Abdelkader, Drew Miller and Mattias Ritola among others for playing time on the fourth line during the regular season.
