It's still early in the playoffs but each team has played at least two games.  It is probably too early to pick a meaningful MVP of the playoffs but I have always been interested in the question of when an award winner first emerges so it is helpful to make picks for awards early and see if those picks are still standing when the award is given out. In most series the story has been how low scoring things have been.  There have been four shutouts so far.  No team has scored more than five goals in any given game.  It is hard to pick an MVP because we are picking a best player from half a week of play.  Nevertheless my pick right now is Braden Holtby of the Washington Capitals.  Holtby has stopped 58 of 59 shots so far in two games with one going into overtime.  While he hasn't really stolen either game his strong goaltending is a reason that Washington leads their series 2-0.  It is hard to lose a series when you allow only one goal. Holtby has a history of strong play i...

Holtby: Game 2 Wasn't Very Hard For Me

So how futile has the Rangers offense been in the first two games? Even Capitals netminder Braden Holtby admitted he had an easy time of it in Game 2 (via Washington Post)... “It wasn’t a very hard game for me,” Holtby said after the game. “We did an outstanding job. Penalty kills are usually where you get the most work and if you eliminate that it’s basically just...

Mike Green's OT winner lifts Washington Capitals to 2-0 series lead

The Washington Capitals now have a commanding 2-0 series lead over the New York Rangers, thanks to Mike Green's overtime power-play blast the only goal that was able to solve either goalie in this Saturday afternoon matchup. The bounce-back season from Alex Ovechkin has been well documented. I mean,Ovechkin  has been on a goal per game pace for his past 24 contests. For me however...

Capitals-Rangers Preview

In the first-round matchup between the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals there is a Vezina Trophy-winning goalie who has taken his team to the Eastern Conference finals, and of course there is ... the other guy. No, Washington's Braden Holtby doesn't have the awards, the accolades or the attention that New York counterpart Henrik Lundqvist has grown accustomed...

After dropping the playoff opener on Thursday night, 3-1 to the Capitals, the New York Rangers took the ice Saturday afternoon at the Verizon Center looking to even the score in game 2.  But scoring once again became a problem for the Rangers.  Some great goaltending on both ends and a Mike Green power play goal in overtime [...]

Tracking the Playoffs: Rangers vs. Capitals Game 2

Despite being favored by most of the advanced stats community to win this series, the Rangers find themselves down 2-0 to the Washington Capitals and have looked very sloppy in both losses. They outplayed the Caps in Game One and didn't come away with the results they were hoping for, but the Rangers were just bad yesterday. The Caps weren't much better despite having a massive...

Caps topple Rangers in overtime

Henrik Lundqvist and Braden Holtby kicked, swiped, caught and otherwise kept getting in the way of the puck, matching each other save-for-save for a second shy of 68 minutes, until Mike Green scored the power-play goal in overtime that gave the Washington Capitals a sweep at home to open their playoff series against the New York Rangers. Green nailed a one-timer from high in the...

Today’s Early Playoff MVP

I am very interested in the question of how early in the season/playoffs an eventual award winner establishes himself as the frontrunner and as such I try to pick winners as soon as I can and update my selection as a new player takes the lead.  Yesterday I picked Braden Holtby of the Washington Capitals as the Conn Smythe leader based on his first two games of the playoffs. ...
