Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored 56 seconds into overtime and Mike Smith made 37 saves to give the Phoenix Coyotes a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night. Ekman-Larsson, who had an assist on Phoenix's first goal, took a pass from Mike Ribeiro and beat goalie Jaroslav Halak with a shot from just inside the blue line. Smith had faced the most shots of any NHL goalie coming into the game (516). He saw another 39 in this one, including 13 in the third period. David Moss and Mikkel Boedker had the other Phoenix goals. Maxim Lapierre and Roman Polak scored for the Blues. Halak made 16 saves. Alexander Steen had an assist to extend the longest active point streak in the NHL to 11 games. Steen, who has 10 goals and four assists during that stretch, has the longest scoring streak for a St. Louis player since Keith Tkachuk went 12 games in 2002-03. The Blues trailed 2-1 going into the third period, but tied it at 2:49 when Steen found Polak sneaking in from the right point a...

Ekman-Larsson lifts Coyotes over Blues 3-2 in overtime

The Coyotes have become so accustomed to engineering late-game comebacks that protecting a lead seems to be an unfamiliar concept. They muscled out a one-goal lead over the Blues after falling behind in the first period and clung to that margin for an entire period before the concentration of play in their own end finally resulted in the tying goal from the Blues. But this –...

Doan enjoying offensive breakout

Goalie Mike Smith and captain Shane Doan are constantly in conversation, even during games. Doan regularly skates past Smith’s crease, especially after the goalie allows a goal, and gives a pep talk along with a whack on his pads for encouragement. But apparently, Smith is also a cheerleader for Doan. “He gets in the locker room here and pouting around, saying, ‘I can...
