Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson is frustrated, and he’s got to blame someone. Naturally, he’s leveled that frustration on Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke. Karlsson spoke for the first time Friday since having in his Achilles cut during a game with the Penguins when Cooke caught him with a skate while finishing a check in the corner. Unsurprisingly, Karlsson isn’t exactly thrilled with Cooke following what many (at least outside of the Ottawa organization) are calling a freak play. “He reached out his leg, which I don’t think he has any reason to do, and that’s why it happened,” Karlsson told reporters, according to Sportsnet. “He has full control of his body and he knows exactly what he’s doing out there. And that’s why I’m sitting here with a leg in a cast.” The reigning Norris Trophy winner said he went into the corner knowing “exactly” who was behind him, and he took caution because of that. “He’s been after me before,” he added.  ”Ever since I got into

MacLean Working Wonders In Ottawa

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN, There’s no higher compliment in this league than an unsolicited comment from opposing teams. Four times this past week while I was in conversations with either a GM or a coach, the name of Paul MacLean came up without prompting. "Can you believe the coaching job by MacLean in Ottawa?," said one NHL GM from another team. And...

Mike Milbury Compares Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin to ‘Crack Addicts’ to Describe Their Play (Video)

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are two of the most aggressive offensive players in the NHL, and NBC Sports analyst Mike Milbury found a new way to describe that offensive hunger on Wednesday night. The outspoken analyst has a unique way of giving hot hockey takes, and Wednesday night was no different, as Milbury used what’s usually looked at as an insult to describe the Pittsburgh...

Travis Yost: Craig Anderson Leaves Game With Gruesome Injury

Make sure to follow Travis on Twitter! -- Following in the footsteps of every single player to wear a Senators sweater this season, Ottawa netminder Craig Anderson was knocked out of Thursday night's game against the New York Rangers with a brutal lower-body injury. The play occurred just a few minutes into the third period, with Chris Kreider losing his edge and barreling...

Malkin hurt after being going into boards

For anyone that wants to question the toughness of Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin, they might want to check out this clip from the Penguins/Panthers game on this Friday night. In the third period of play, Malkin was knocked hard into the boards by Florida defenseman Erik Gudbranson and keep an eye on his neck as it snaps back from the collision: Malkin's current...

Should the Rangers consider a veteran like Alfredsson?

Former All Star Alfredsson would be a nice fit in NY – depending on cost The Rangers need to get more offense and Chris Kreider needs serious minutes; not just as an injury fill-in. Those two issues, the inconsistent play of J.T. Miller, and the underwhelming performances of  Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik are why the Rangers may want to consider speaking to Ottawa about veteran...
HOW'D THAT HAPPEN?

Flyers somehow score with five Pens in crease

This was a completely bizarre series of events.  First off, how the puck stayed out of the net for so long is beyond me.  Second off, what on Earth was Penguins goalie Tomas Vokoun doing?  He was the only Penguin not in the crease. Phoenix Coyotes forward Paul Bissonnette described it best though. Well executed Harlem Shake during the Pens vs Flyers game tonight. twitter.com/BizNasty2point…...

Evgeni Malkin injured after slamming into the boards

Before the discussion even comes up, lets make it clear that this was not a dirty hit by Florida Panthers defenseman Erik Gudbranson.  It was a completely legal hit, and this was just a casualty of both players being very big, skating very fast and being close to the boards. Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin was driving wide in the third period to try and get a shot.  As...

Will Neil Catch Del Zotto With His Head Down Tonight?

Last spring, the Rangers and Senators played a grueling seven game series that at times got pretty nasty with Carl Hagelin injuring Daniel Alfredsson with a hit from behind and Chris Neil concussing Brian Boyle with a hit to the head. Another hit that may still have repercussions is when Michael Del Zotto caught Neil with his head down behind the net in Game 4 and dropped him...

What We Expect from the Media Regarding Malkin's Concussion

The following is how we fully expect the media (and some fans) to react regarding Evgeni Malkin's concussion. This is not our opinion. This is a joke. Evgeni Malkin is experiencing concussion symptoms. Or so we're told. Of course, Malkin hasn't spoken to the media directly about the injury. It's just another sign that the Russian star doesn't "get...

Penguins’ Defense Rests

Is it me, or did the Penguins’ 6-5 loss to Philadelphia Wednesday night look eerily familiar? It was almost as if we entered a space/time vortex and were watching a game from last season’s disastrous first-round playoff matchup. The game featured an all-too-familiar script. The Penguins rocketed from the starting gate to snatch a quick lead. Philly coach Peter Laviolette burned...

Penguins beat Panthers; Lose Malkin

The Pittsburgh Penguins rebounded from a crushing loss on Wednesday to defeat the Florida Panthers 3-1, Friday night at Consol Energy Center. The bigger story, however, is the loss of Evgeni Malkin who crashed crazily into the boards behind the Florida net early in the third period. The reigning MVP and scoring champion skated off the ice on his own power, but never returned to...

Wayne Simmonds completes Gordie Howe Hattrick with fight against Tanner Glass

Wednesday night’s Philadelphia Flyers-Pittsburgh Penguins game had all the makings of a playoff game.  Two intense rivals fighting to the bitter end, and a fully packed barn that was rocking.  Wayne Simmonds had a fantastic game against the Penguins, recording two goals, one assist and a fight in the Flyers 6-5 win. For those of you that don’t know, a Gordie Howe Hattrick is...

Kovalev On Today’s Game In The NHL

via Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, One of the most highly skilled players in hockey, Kovalev is not enjoying the fact that scoring is down in the past few NHL seasons. “There's more just kind of straightforward hockey (today),” Kovalev said. “Not much skill compared to the old days.” One of Kovalev's old coaches, Dan Bylsma, acknowledged...

Eklund: Malkin Apparently Concussed

As soon as I saw the way Evgeni Malkin's head snapped back on that hit by Florida's Eric Gudbranson last night, I suspected that the next update on his status would be what came today: he's almost definitely out for tomorrow's game against Tampa and there is no way at this point to predict a return date. Tough hit by Gudbranson but not a dirty one. I've been...

RECAP: Collateral Damage. PENS WIN.

Wednesday night, we were all treated to a great hockey game. Friday night, we got an ordinary one. No one would talk about this game ever again if it weren't for an apparent big-time injury to Evgeni Malkin. Malkin went crashing into the boards early in the third period. It looked horrible.    This game had a good pace to it at the beginning, but Florida was...
