For 27 games Philadelphia Flyers fans were able to watch Simon Gagne back in the team’s uniform once more. One would think that the 33-year-old winger would be lost in the numbers game for the cap-challenged team but that might not be true. Flyers GM Paul Holmgren told the Philadelphia Inquirer on Tuesday that the team is “kicking around” the idea of inviting Gagne to training camp for a paid try-out. “But I’m sure he’s getting calls from other teams too” Holmgren said. “I have no gut feeling as to what Gagne will do.” While familiarity could help the Flyers’ cause the team is currently about $2 million above the salary cap ceiling so they couldn’t re-sign Gagne upon watching him try out even if they wanted to.

He has two assists and a plus-5 rating in the NHL and 12 goals with 28 assists, as well as 216 PIMs, in the AHL. Manning...

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Expectations for Lecavalier, Quick Hits

Vincent Lecavalier is not the player he was about five years ago. Flyers fans should not expect him to play at a superstar-caliber level on a regular basis. However, at age 33, he is still a quality second-line center and figures to be an excellent complement to top-line center Claude Giroux and a boon to the development of young linemate Brayden Schenn. The Flyers wanted to...

Tim Panaccio: UPDATE: Claude Giroux skating, but no shots

Everyone I encountered at the construction site of what was once called Skate Zone in Voorhees, pretty had the same reaction in recent weeks. When we talked about how long an off-season it’s been, they began counting the months on their fingers. Four, full months and some days added on. That’s how long it’s been. It drove Peter Laviolette insane. You don’t...

Canadiens C Alex Galchenyuk’s golf swing makes Charles Barkley’s look good (vid)

As Eye on Hockey notes, such as is often the case for athletes who have reached the pro level in other sports, many NHL players play golf. It’s a relatively safe pastime — Claude Giroux’s experience excluded — and a great way to spend some time outside in the company of friends. And becoming more […]The post Canadiens C Alex Galchenyuk’s golf swing makes Charles Barkley’s...

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Blueline Balance and Roster Battles

For a team with a defense corps that has been harshly maligned in the last few years, the Philadelphia Flyers have a lot of roster stability and decent depth heading into training camp. Barring injuries, there are five players who are locks to be in the starting lineup come opening night of the 2013-14 season: Kimmo Timonen, Luke Schenn, Braydon Coburn, Mark Streit and Nicklas Grossmann...
