It took everything out of the team, its fans and an entire city, but the Philadelphia Flyers finally finished off Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
Claude Giroux set the tone early on with a big hit on Sidney Crosby just a few seconds into the game. Giroux followed it up seconds later by giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead. Under normal circumstances in this series that would have been the kiss of death. This time, however, the Flyers were able to build on the lead.
At 13:01, Scott Hartnell poked a puck past a sprawling Marc-Andre Fluery, as the Flyers scored their 12th power play goal of the series for a 2-0 lead. 5 minutes into the second period, rookie Erik Gustafsson skated over the blue line and unleashed a slap shot that ticked off a Puttsburgh defender and into the net. In a series of shocking moments, that may have been one of the most shocking.
The NHL’s leading scorer Evgeni Malkin cut the lead to 3-1 8:34 in to ...
