Aside from the Boston Bruins, one of the only other teams in the NHL’s Eastern Conference that might match up well with the Flyers in the Stanley Cup Playoffs is the New York Rangers. Yes… THOSE Rangers. The Rangers that the Flyers have not beaten in 5 meetings this season. The Philadelphia Flyers are in a familiar situation. It’s just not one that they expected to be in after a rash of offseason moves to make the team better. Close, but still not quite there. Not sure if they are contenders or pretenders. These Flyers were built to be strong on the defensive side of the puck. Signing the best available goaltender was designed to cement the team, since it probably wouldn’t score a lot of goals. Instead, the team has lost Chris Pronger for the season and has had so-so goaltending from its top-flight goalie, Ilya Bryzgalov. The team is also second in goals scored in the NHL. The offense was supposed to be the issue this season, but instead, the tables have turn...

Tim Panaccio: Timonen Rips Flyers after Loss to NYR

Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen didn't hold back after Saturday's 5-2 defrocking of the Flyers by the Rangers. That's five, straight Rangers wins against the Flyers this season. He talked about the lack of effort and lack of compete. His rant began with my simple question as to whether this game was really all about the Flyers unable to compete with the Rangers...

Flyers Defense Continues To Struggle In Loss To Rangers

Game Notes: The Flyers have lost their last seven games to the Rangers (0-6-1).  It’s the longest losing streak since they lost 10 in a row from Nov. 28, 1971 to Jan. 14, 1973.  That same streak extended into a 13-game winless streak (0-11-2) that lasted through December 26, 1973. The Flyers fell to 4-8-1 this season in games that start before 7pm, and allowed at least...

MINI-PREVIEW 6:30 AM EST Tonight, we are about to learn the full extent of the Philadelphia Flyers' (31-17-7). The team needs to put aside the frustration of losing five of their first seven games since the All-Star break, including two more games to the New York Rangers. Bill Meltzer: Flyers Gameday: 2/11/12 vs. Rangers

PREVIEW 12:05 AM EST Regular season hockey doesn't get any tougher or more grueling than this: playing games on back-to-back days against the top-ranked teams in the Eastern and Western Conferences on the final two days of a stretch of seven games in 10 days. That's what the Philadelphia Flyers (31-16-7, 13-8-5 at home) face this weekend, starting with a Saturday matinee...

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: 2/13/12 PLUS win Flyers-Penguins tickets (2/18 game)

Heading into last night's game in Detroit, everything was set up for Philly to lose the game and become the Red Wings' 20th consecutive victim on home ice. That is, in fact, what happened but the way that the Flyers lost the game was galling. Even when the Flyers grabbed a pair of one-goal leads -- courtesy of a two-goal outburst from Brayden Schenn and a Max Talbot goal...

GDT - Game #57:  Red Wings host Flyers (7:30)

The Red Wings (37-17-2) will be looking to add one more record to the annals of the greatest franchise in hockey tonight, when they host the Flyers (31-17-7) in quest for 20 consecutive home wins. It won’t be easy, the Flyers are road warriors 18-8-2 (3rd) and have posted a sparkling 9-2-2 mark against Western Conference opponents this year. However, the Flyers did host a...

From Last Night: Flyers Beat Leafs

Game Notes: Scott Hartnell recorded the second “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” of his career.  His last came Jan. 11, 2011 against Buffalo. Claude Giroux’s 21st goal of the season pulled him within one point of Evgeni Malkin in the NHL scoring race.  He has 21 goals and 40 assists for 61 points.  Giroux was also 10-for-16 (63 percent) on faceoffs and is now 53.2...

Rangers-Flyers Preview

The Philadelphia Flyers are looking to win their second Atlantic Division title in three seasons. That may not happen if they can't figure out how to beat the New York Rangers. After breaking a three-game losing streak their last time out, the host Flyers seek their first win in five tries this season over the Eastern Conference-leading Rangers on Saturday. Second-place Philadelphia...

Effort Questioned After Flyers’ Fifth Loss of the Season to Rangers

Photo Courtesy of AP/Yahoo Sports By Charlie O’Connor (@THG_Charlie) Same story, same result. And Kimmo Timonen, for one, has had just about enough. For the fifth time in the 2011-12 regular season, the Philadelphia Flyers faced their division rival, the New York Rangers, in a battle for Eastern Conference supremacy. And for a fifth straight time, the Flyers found themselves...
