It has not been a kind offseason for the Philadelphia Flyers. After offering upwards of $350 million in new contracts to marquee free agents, all of their offers have been rebuffed… Or matched. Now, to add injury to insult, the Flyers will have to scramble to fill another hole.

Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros tore his Achilles’ tendon last week while training in his native Slovakia. The injury could see Meszaros miss all of the upcoming regular season and possibly the playoffs too. The Flyers have already lost Matt Carle to free agency, and likely Chris Pronger to post concussion syndrome. Without the acquisitions the Flyers hoped for in Ryan Suter and Shea Weber, their defense is even thinner than first thought. There are still a couple of players available in free agency and maybe even via trade, but none will have the impact that Weber would have. Andrej Meszaros had surgery to repair the Achilles’ tendon earlier this week in Philadelphia.

In the meantime, the Flyers locked up their own free agent defenseman Marc-Andre Bourdon. Bourdon got significant playing time this season with the Flyers because of injury and turned in a solid rookie campaign. While terms were not immediately available, Philly.com reports that the deal is for 2 years and $1.225 million.

The Flyers also signed their first round draft pick Scott Laughton to an entry level contract.

While most big name free agents are off the board at this point, Phoenix Winger Shane Doan has yet to make a decision. The Flyers are believed to have offered the 36 year old winger a deal, but reports this week suggest that the interest is not reciprocal. While Doan has maintained his desire to stay in Phoenix all along, all signs point to him signing with the New York Rangers. The Rangers also recently acquired winger Rick Nash from Columbus, strengthening a team that dominated the Flyers last season.
