Canyon of Blueshirts:
The Flyers have placed Nikolai Zherdev on waivers. I've made numerous cases for the Rangers to acquire him in the past (most recently this Monday). They have ample cap space, he has an expiring deal, low cost (free), and he has the ability to be a big impact player. The Rangers are familiar with Zherdev, which is probably not a good thing. But on a short term basis it's not as big of a problem.Worst case scenario, Zherdev floats around and is the lazy, disinterested player that is bound to force him back to the KHL. If that happens, he sits in the press box for the remainder of the season, no harm no foul.
On the flip side, Zherdev can add top six talent and some much needed scoring ability. With Gaborik out, the Rangers can't afford not too claim him. At the least, he's an insurance policy. But for all we know, Zherdev might be so excited to be getting ice time that he is motivated to perform.
It's a no brainer at this point.
