Flyers Winger James Van Riemsdyk will miss 4-6 weeks, and likely the rest of the regular season with a broken foot.

The Philadelphia Flyers, who have struggled as of late will be minus James Van Riemsdyk once more.

Van Riemsdyk laid out to block a shot by the Islanders’ Milan Jurcina in the first period of Thursday night’s matchup at the Wells Fargo Center. The puck hit him in the foot, sending the winger to the locker room.

JVR broke the foot and will require surgery to repair it. He is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, which could effectively end his regular season.

JVR got a new contract in the offseason after an amazing performance in the 2011 postseason. His season, however, has not been a smooth one. JVR has fought off a litany of injuries, including a concussion that sidelined him for 15 games. He has also battled a hip injury for much of the season.

Because of the injuries, Van Riemsdyk has struggled to find his timing and to make a significant contribution on a consistent basis. This season was viewed by many to be a potential breakout year for the 22 year old New Jersey native, but the injuries have derailed that.

JVR was also the subject of numerous trade rumors over several weeks leading up to this week’s trade deadline. When the smoke settled, however, Flyers’ GM Paul Holmgren said that JVR was signed here for a long time and that he couldn’t stop other teams from expressing their interest, indicating that the Flyers had no genuine interest in moving him.

Holmgren announced Van Riemsdyk’s status yesterday and noted that several other Flyers, including Jeff Carter and Chris Pronger have recovered from similar injuries. The Flyers hope that JVR will be able to make it back to the ice in time for the playoffs.Similar Posts:
