The San Jose Sharks signed center Scott Gomez to a one-year contract worth a reported $700,000 on Wednesday. Gomez had spent the past week working out and meeting with the Sharks. He could be slotted on San Jose's third line and the second power-play unit, ESPN.com reported. The Montreal Canadiens bought out Gomez's contract last week. He received a pro-rated $5.5 million from the Canadiens, who were paying him $7.39 million annually. Gomez struggled with the Canadiens last season, scoring only two goals and falling to their fourth line. "My interaction with him so far, he's coming across as a very hungry player, a guy that would love to prove himself right before he proves everybody else wrong," Sharks coach Todd McLellan told the San Jose Mercury News. "And that's a pretty strong motivator." Larry Robinson, one of McLellan's assistants, and Gomez were together when Robinson was New Jersey's head coach. The Devils won the Stanley Cup during Gomez's rookie year in 2000.
