It wasn’t pretty, nor attractive. The Flyers managed to get just 14 shots from only 9 players in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Series vs. the New Jersey Devils, but 2 of those 14 shots went in the net, and that was enough to win the game.
The Flyers relied on their savvy smarts and patience, and managed to out-bore the Devils 2-1. On the strength of two second period goals, the Flyers defense carried the load tonight. Brian Boucher made all the saves he had to make, which included a few lucky bounces, and was only beaten on Travis Zajac’s third period goal that went off of Ian Laperriere. The Devils were frustrated into just 24 shots, along with a few other missed opportunities. Ilya Kovalchuk had the two best opportunities of the night.
